WordPerfect Office

WordPerfect Office is a Windows-only productivity suite now owned by Alludo (formerly Corel). The suite bundles the WordPerfect word processor, Quattro Pro spreadsheets, Presentations slideware, and adjunct tools like WordPerfect Lightning, PDF creation/editing, eBook publishing, photo editing (AfterShot), and video capture. It’s known for deep formatting control via Reveal Codes, broad file compatibility (60+ formats, including Microsoft Office), and legal‑centric functions such as redaction, metadata removal, and Bates numbering—features that have sustained adoption in legal, government, and small‑business segments. In September 2022, Corel rebranded as Alludo, consolidating its portfolio (CorelDRAW, WinZip, MindManager, Parallels) and signaling a strategy focused on knowledge‑worker productivity and flexible work models.

WordPerfect’s origins trace to Satellite Software International (SSI), founded in 1979 by Bruce Bastian and Alan C. Ashton in Orem, Utah. Initially developed under contract at Brigham Young University and first marketed as SSI*WP in 1980, WordPerfect rose to market leadership through the mid‑to‑late 1980s on MS‑DOS, propelled by its advanced features and highly regarded customer support. SSI renamed itself WordPerfect Corporation in 1985. In 1994, WordPerfect Corporation was acquired by Novell, and in 1996 the WordPerfect product line was sold to Corel, which began integrating it into broader office suites and global channels. Corel’s acquisition from Novell was valued around $180–$186 million in cash, stock, and royalties, and brought a user base then estimated at ~20 million into Corel’s orbit—materially expanding Corel’s scale and positioning WordPerfect within a diversified product portfolio.

In the modern era, WordPerfect sits within Alludo’s private‑equity ownership structure. KKR acquired Corel from Vector Capital in July 2019 (terms undisclosed), with contemporaneous reports indicating a transaction value over US$1 billion—reflecting Alludo/Corel’s multi‑brand software platform, 90M+ users across creativity and productivity verticals, and an acquisition‑driven growth thesis. Vector Capital previously took Corel private (and public again), and supported multiple acquisitions before selling to KKR. In 2022, Corel’s rebrand to Alludo highlighted 2.5M+ paying customer relationships and ongoing M&A ambitions, but Alludo remains privately held without publicly disclosed standalone valuations post‑KKR acquisition.

WordPerfect Office includes: WordPerfect (precision word processing with Reveal Codes), Quattro Pro (spreadsheets), Presentations (slide decks), PDF tools (creation, editing, forms), eBook Publisher (EPUB/MOBI), WordPerfect Lightning (content gathering/notes), AfterShot photo editing (originating from Corel’s Bibble acquisition), and video capture utilities. The Professional Edition adds the Paradox database (file‑based RDBMS) for data management. The suite is sold as a perpetual license (Standard and Professional), supports Microsoft formats (DOCX/XLSX/PPTX), and caters to long‑document workflows and legal compliance tasks (redaction, metadata stripping, Bates numbering). PCMag rates it “Excellent” for precise formatting control, noting its Windows‑only scope and limited real‑time collaboration relative to cloud suites.

Corel/Alludo has used acquisitions to broaden its portfolio, many of which indirectly strengthen WordPerfect Office’s ecosystem. Notably, Bibble Labs (rebranded as AfterShot Pro) brought RAW image editing, later bundled into WordPerfect Office; Corel also acquired Parallels, MindManager, and ClearSlide, expanding into virtualization, mind‑mapping, and sales enablement. These deals underpin Alludo’s “connected knowledge worker” strategy and cross‑brand bundling, while keeping WordPerfect relevant with media and workflow adjuncts included in the suite.

Recent releases emphasize enhanced Microsoft Office compatibility, expanded Reveal Codes controls, integrated Oxford Concise Dictionary, and usability improvements across the suite (templates, macro manager, spreadsheets search/replace). WordPerfect continues to invest in PDF import/edit fidelity and long‑document tooling, reflecting its focus on reliability for legal, government, and enterprise environments rather than cloud‑native collaboration features.

Alludo’s 2022 rebrand communicates a future‑of‑work ethos: flexibility, productivity, and employee autonomy. The company publicly adopted a remote‑first stance—95% of employees opted to work remotely—underscoring cultural priorities around work‑life balance and distributed teams while maintaining global reach across more than 130 countries.

WordPerfect retains a devoted user base among legal professionals who value Reveal Codes and precise formatting in complex filings. Reviews note strong long‑document support, built‑in legal tools, and cost‑effective perpetual licensing, albeit with a dated UI and limited collaboration versus Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Community resources—WordPerfect Universe forums, toolboxes, and the Corel/Alludo Discovery Center—provide macros, templates, and how‑to guides that sustain engagement. Historically, WordPerfect counted tens of millions of users; today, Alludo cites millions of paying relationships across its brands, while WordPerfect specifically remains niche but resilient in law, government, and SMBs.
