Twine

Twine is a UK-based online marketplace and social network launched in January 2016 (originally founded as Clowdy in 2014) that specializes in connecting freelance professionals across the creative, technical, and marketing sectors with businesses worldwide. Headquartered in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, it serves as a dynamic platform where freelancers in music, film, design, animation, development, AI, and digital marketing can showcase their portfolios, connect with peers, and secure project-based work. At its heart, Twine offers a simple yet powerful user experience for clients and freelancers alike. Clients can post a project briefing in just a few minutes, specifying scope, timelines, and budgets. Once live, Twine’s AI-assisted expert matching system instantly surfaces relevant talent from its pool of over half a million professionals. Many clients report being introduced to suitable freelancers within 24 hours—dramatically reducing the time to hire. The platform’s freelancer base spans an impressive range of skills: from video production, animation, UX/UI and web development, graphic design, digital marketing, SEO, voiceover, music composition, to AI dataset labeling and machine learning services. Twine enables freelancers to build rich, multimedia portfolios without file upload limits and allows them to tag collaborators on team projects, ensuring proper credit and shared visibility. Twine differentiates itself through its flexible yet robust operational model. For standard projects, clients pay only freelancers themselves, avoiding upfront fees. Twine’s fee is success-based, making it financially attractive, especially compared to traditional recruitment services. For larger or more complex initiatives, the Twine Business offering provides enterprise-level support—entailing project scoping assistance, curated talent recommendations, streamlined billing, and options for consolidated invoicing and enterprise-grade payments. Beyond mere hiring, Twine promotes diversity and inclusivity, empowering clients to indicate preferences for diverse teams and gain access to a varied global talent pool. Its suite of tools—from intuitive portfolio creation to AI-powered pitch generation for freelancers—helps users win jobs and manage projects more efficiently. Businesses from startups to well-known enterprises trust Twine to tackle a wide range of tasks. These include video production for marketing, animation, cloud-based app development, dataset creation for machine learning, rebranding efforts, and ongoing content marketing campaigns. Many clients share that Twine enables them to scale projects faster, find specialist talent often unavailable through traditional channels, and manage global creative teams with ease. Since rebranding in 2016, Twine has been recognized by TechCrunch and other industry voices as a compelling platform for creative freelancing. It has also earned accolades such as the UK Creative Business Cup in 2014.

Twine distinguishes itself in the competitive freelance marketplace landscape through a combination of vertical specialization, efficient AI-driven matching, and enterprise-friendly services—offering advantages not typically found on generalist platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. First, Twine’s focus on creative industries, development, marketing, and AI workflows gives it a unique edge. Whereas many marketplaces offer a broad range of services, Twine curates its talent to specialized sectors, offering a quality-first experience for clients seeking video producers, animators, UX/UI designers, AI engineers, or dataset annotators. This focus reduces noise and enhances relevance, making it easier for clients to find the right experts. Second, Twine’s AI-assisted expert matching significantly accelerates the hiring process, with most clients matched within 24 hours of posting a brief. This automation leads to faster project kickoffs and reduces administrative overhead for clients—unlike more manual or bid-driven systems used by other platforms.
