TunnelBear
By TunnelBear Inc. (a McAfee company)
TunnelBear is a Toronto-based cybersecurity firm that has redefined the consumer VPN market through its emphasis on transparency and user-centric design. Founded in 2011, the company rose to prominence by making encryption 'beary' simple, utilizing a unique brand identity that stood in stark contrast to the aggressive, often paranoid marketing of its competitors. As a subsidiary of McAfee since 2018, TunnelBear combines the agility of a specialized privacy team with the technical resources and global reach of a cybersecurity giant. The company is a vocal advocate for an open internet, frequently partnering with NGOs and providing free bandwidth to activists in censored regions. Its market position is defined not by being the fastest or the most feature-heavy, but by being the most trustworthy and transparent, a reputation solidified by its annual independent security audits.
TunnelBear was founded in 2011 by Ryan Dochuk and Daniel Kaldor in Toronto, Canada. Dochuk, who previously worked at Microsoft and Goldman Sachs, and Kaldor, a former engineer at Microsoft, shared a vision of creating a privacy tool that their own family members could use without needing a degree in computer science. The company's early years were characterized by rapid organic growth, fueled by its distinctive bear-themed branding and a commitment to keeping the interface as clean as possible. Unlike many VPN startups that relied on aggressive affiliate marketing, TunnelBear focused on building a community of loyal users through a generous freemium model and a playful social media presence that turned the 'scary' topic of digital surveillance into something approachable.
Initially bootstrapped and growing through its profitable freemium model, TunnelBear reached a massive user base of over 22 million people by early 2018. This success led to its acquisition by the global cybersecurity leader McAfee in March 2018. While the specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition was a strategic move by McAfee to integrate TunnelBear's user-friendly VPN technology into its consumer product suite, specifically its 'Safe Connect' offering. Post-acquisition, TunnelBear has continued to operate as an independent brand and team within McAfee, benefitting from the parent company's vast financial resources and R&D capabilities while maintaining its original Toronto headquarters and engineering culture.
The TunnelBear product ecosystem is divided into personal and professional offerings. For individuals, it provides the Free, Monthly, and multi-year Unlimited plans, all of which grant access to the same 256-bit encrypted tunnel and 'no-logs' network. The 'TunnelBear for Teams' offering is the flagship business solution, providing a comprehensive management console where administrators can add or remove users, manage centralized billing through a single annual invoice, and monitor team security. Beyond the core VPN, TunnelBear offers browser extensions (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) that act as lightweight proxies, and a dedicated 'Blocker' tool to prevent tracking. The company also maintains a 'Bandwidth Program' for NGOs, providing free annual accounts to activists and journalists in high-risk zones.
Since its inception, TunnelBear has expanded its server footprint to include more than 8,000 servers across 45+ countries. While headquartered in Canada, its network is truly global, with a focus on high-speed nodes in North America, Europe, and Asia. In recent years, TunnelBear has made significant strides in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, evidenced by its recent localization of applications into Arabic and Khmer. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to support internet freedom in regions with high censorship. The company’s partnership with 'Localization Lab' has been instrumental in this effort, ensuring that users in non-English speaking markets can navigate the software with ease during times of digital unrest.
TunnelBear has maintained a consistent release cadence, recently adding support for the high-performance WireGuard protocol to improve connection speeds and stability. Major updates in late 2024 and 2025 have seen the introduction of 'SplitBear' (split tunneling) for Windows and Mac, allowing for more granular control over what traffic is encrypted. The team also launched 'Two-Factor Authentication' (2FA) for all account types, significantly hardening the security of the user dashboard. Furthermore, TunnelBear introduced 'Encrypted Client Hello' (ECH) support, a cutting-edge feature that hides the server name in the TLS handshake, making it even harder for ISPs to block or monitor traffic to specific websites.
The company culture at TunnelBear is deeply rooted in transparency, humor, and a genuine passion for internet privacy. Even after the McAfee acquisition, 100% of the original TunnelBear team remained together in their Toronto office, preserving their unique 'Bear' identity. The workplace environment is described as collaborative and engineering-focused, with a strong emphasis on ethical hacking and community support. Employees are encouraged to participate in 'Internet Freedom' initiatives, and the company’s internal values prioritize clarity over complexity. This culture is reflected in their customer-facing communication, which is famously filled with bear-related puns, intended to keep the user experience light and engaging despite the serious nature of the product.
TunnelBear has fostered a robust community of digital rights advocates through its 'Internet Freedom Hub.' It maintains active partnerships with global NGOs such as 'Internews,' 'Access Now,' and the 'Freedom of the Press Foundation,' providing them with the tools needed to protect activists and journalists. The company is also highly active in online forums and social media, where they provide transparent updates on network status and security audits. Their 'Bandwidth Support' program is a cornerstone of their community engagement, offering free or unlimited data to citizens in countries like Iran, Venezuela, and Turkey during times of government-mandated internet shutdowns or increased censorship.
