Trello is a visual collaboration tool that helps individuals and teams manage projects and workflows using boards, lists, and cards. Known for its simplicity and flexibility, Trello caters to a wide range of users, from freelancers to large enterprises. It is now part of Atlassian's suite of productivity tools.
Trello was founded in 2011 by Joel Spolsky and Michael Pryor under Fog Creek Software. The idea originated from the need for a more visual and collaborative project management tool. Trello was officially launched at TechCrunch Disrupt in September 2011. In 2014, it spun off into its own company, Trello Inc., with Michael Pryor as CEO. By 2017, Trello had grown rapidly to over 19 million users and was acquired by Atlassian for $425 million. Since then, it has continued to expand its user base globally.
Trello raised $10.3 million in Series A funding in 2014 from investors such as Spark Capital and Index Ventures. Its valuation peaked at $425 million during its acquisition by Atlassian in 2017.
Trello employs a Kanban-style interface with boards for organizing tasks. Key features include:
Multiple views (Timeline, Calendar, Dashboard) for advanced project tracking.
Recent updates include features like list colors and collapsible lists to enhance visual organization and usability.
In December 2018, Trello acquired Butler, an automation tool that became integral to its platform. This acquisition strengthened Trello’s automation capabilities. Additionally, the introduction of Power-Ups allowed third-party developers to create integrations that expanded Trello's functionality.
Trello continues to innovate with features like list colors for prioritization and collapsible lists for decluttering boards. These updates aim to improve task management efficiency while maintaining its user-friendly appeal.
Trello emphasizes transparency, simplicity, innovation, collaboration, customer-centricity, and inclusivity. These values guide its operations and foster a positive work environment while ensuring user satisfaction.
Trello has a diverse user base that includes freelancers, small businesses, and large organizations across various industries such as marketing, HR, legal, finance, and IT. It supports over 20 languages, enabling global accessibility. By October 2019, Trello had surpassed 50 million users worldwide.
