Transloadit is a Berlin-based, privately held technology company specializing in Media Processing as a Service (MPaaS). It offers developers and businesses a unified API for handling the upload, transformation, and distribution of images, videos, audio, and documents. The platform employs a unique modular architecture of “robots” and JSON-based workflow templates, enabling powerful, customizable pipelines for media automation.
Founded in 2009 by three engineers from Berlin and Amsterdam—Felix Geisendörfer, Kevin van Zonneveld, and Tim Koschützki—Transloadit emerged from the open-source community. Its initial mission was to process media programmatically in production, becoming one of the first platforms to use Node.js in production environments. Transloadit reached ramen profitability in 2012, was formally incorporated as Transloadit Ltd. that same year, and introduced real-time video encoding, garnering interest as early as 2010.
Growth continued organically—bootstrapped, highly reliant on open-source contributions, and focused on remote-first operations. By 2024, the company achieved recurring revenue of $1.3M, up from $821.2K in 2023, and served over 25,000 customers, including Coursera, The New York Times, Vimeo, NVIDIA, and Cloudflare.
Transloadit remains bootstrapped, having raised no external venture funding. Despite this, it has demonstrated consistent financial growth, maintaining profitability since 2012 and achieving over $1.3M in annual revenue by late 2024. Its valuation is not publicly disclosed, but its sustainable revenue and customer base support its continued independent status.
Transloadit provides a robust and flexible media-processing platform, powered by a range of ~80 modular “robots” including:
Upload support: resumable uploads via Tus, Uppy frontend plugins, server-side imports/exports to/from S3, Azure, FTP/SFTP, Dropbox, and more.
Their developer SDKs, REST API, and dashboard support powerful yet user-friendly integration across platforms.
Recent product additions and enhancements as of 2024–2025 include:
Transloadit is strongly remote-only, with core values rooted in open source, transparency, and developer experience. The founders attribute their cultural ethos to their early open-source collaboration and remote work beginning in 2008. Transloadit dedicates roughly $34,666 per month (about 80%) of revenue to supporting projects like Uppy and Tus. They operate with a small, engaged team (~12 full-time, plus engineers) and emphasize employee satisfaction, open collaboration, curiosity, security, performance, and versatility as guiding principles. Transparent pay practices and an internal GitHub “Board” of feature ideas empower all team members to contribute meaningfully.
