Shift Browser, founded in 2016 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, is a product of Redbrick, a Canadian technology group focused on productivity and browser innovation. The company started as a solution to the multi-account, multi-app chaos faced by digital professionals, quickly evolving from a side project into a globally adopted power browser praised for its customizability and centralized digital workflow management.
Shift emerged from a real-world pain point: founder Michael Foucher and his team needed a better way to manage multiple email accounts and workspaces without jumping across browsers and incognito windows. After launching as a subscription-based Electron app in 2016, the company enjoyed rapid ARR growth and broadened its base of loyal users, ultimately rebuilding on Chromium to increase security, speed, and usability. The development team, still predominantly Canadian and based in Victoria, continues to drive product direction and design.
Shift Browser is privately owned, with disclosed funding including $758,000 CAD in its early years and subsequent growth as a Redbrick portfolio company. Shift has never been a heavily venture-backed business; instead grown through organic adoption and Redbrick’s financial stewardship.
Shift is positioned as the world’s first fully customizable browser. Its features include drag-and-drop customization of every element (apps, bars, panels), powerful multi-account management for emails (Gmail, Outlook, Office 365), and seamless integration with over 1,500 web applications (Slack, Google Workspace, Trello, Salesforce, and more). Workspaces (Spaces) let users organize digital life into separate contexts for work, personal, or specific projects. Shift supports multiple Chrome extensions, custom notifications, unified search, and robust notification management, all within a carbon-neutral footprint and with strong privacy controls. The offering is rounded out with templates to expedite setup and interface theming, catering to different business roles.
Shift’s culture is rooted in transparency, listening to users, and iterative product development. The team actively engages its Customer Advisory Board for feature reviews and feedback, fostering a community-driven roadmap. Shift emphasizes Canadian tech pride, environmental responsibility, user empowerment, and removing barriers to digital productivity. The interface and business approach are designed to make technology approachable—users shouldn’t need an instruction manual to unlock Shift’s power.
Shift has a dedicated global user base, including entrepreneurs, freelancers, agencies, small businesses, and power users managing complex digital lives. The community participates through public forums, feedback channels, and the Customer Advisory Board, providing direct input into product evolution. Shift is ranked as the top Canadian browser on SourceForge and Slashdot, with adoption both within and outside Canada.
The Shift team continues to innovate with user-driven features, regular releases, and a vision of the browser as a command center for work and life—distinct from traditional, tab-focused browsers and well-aligned with modern, multitasking workstyles.
