NotebookLM (originally launched as Project Tailwind) is an AI-powered notebook designed to help users synthesize information from complex documents. Unlike standard AI models that draw from global training data, NotebookLM uses "Source Grounding." This means the AI effectively "reads" only the specific documents you upload—PDFs, Google Docs, websites, or text files—and bases its answers, summaries, and insights strictly on that localized knowledge base.
The Origins: The product was first introduced at Google I/O 2023 under the experimental name "Project Tailwind." It was developed by a small, agile team within Google Labs, overseen by Google’s Senior Director of Product, Raiza Martin, and renowned author/technologist Steven Johnson.
Rapid Evolution: It transitioned from a limited waitlist in the U.S. to a global rollout in late 2024.
