mediasmart

mediasmart is a global leader in mobile programmatic advertising, currently operating as a key business unit within the Affle Group (NSE: AFFLE). Founded in Madrid, the company established itself as one of the first European movers in the mobile Real-Time Bidding (RTB) space. It has built its reputation on proprietary technology that emphasizes transparency, efficiency, and a 'Privacy by Design' architecture. Today, mediasmart operates at a massive scale, serving a diverse client base of advertisers, trading desks, and agencies across more than 80 countries. Its integration into the Affle ecosystem in 2020 provided the platform with significant capital and consumer intelligence resources, enabling it to expand its omnichannel capabilities into Connected TV and Digital Out-of-Home. The company is recognized for its high-performance algorithms that manage billions of daily transactions, offering a unique blend of self-serve autonomy and high-level technical sophistication. Mediasmart's market position is defined by its ability to provide measurable incremental lift, making it a preferred choice for brands that need to prove the direct relationship between ad spend and business outcomes like store visits or app growth.

The story of mediasmart began in January 2012 in Madrid, Spain, when Noelia Amoedo and her co-founders identified a critical gap in the burgeoning mobile advertising market. At the time, mobile ads were largely treated like traditional desktop or TV ads—fixed price and untargeted—failing to leverage the personal, location-aware nature of smartphones. Amoedo, who brought extensive executive experience from companies like Palm, Hi5, and Buongiorno, envisioned a 'self-learning' advertising platform that could reach users individually and optimize in real-time. The company was founded with a 'Privacy by Design' ethos long before it became a mainstream requirement, a decision that proved pivotal in the European market. Early backing came from prominent investors like Michael Kleindl (KOMM Investment) and Kibo Ventures (Aquilino Peña), who recognized the scalability of the 'bsmart' proprietary technology. Over its first few years, the company evolved from a service-based model to a robust Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform, eventually becoming a dominant player in the European mobile programmatic landscape before its strategic acquisition by Affle in early 2020.

mediasmart's financial journey is highlighted by a steady path of venture-backed growth followed by a major strategic exit. In its early stages, the company secured funding from leading Spanish and international tech investors, including Kibo Ventures and Michael Kleindl, which allowed it to develop its core 'bsmart' technology and expand into London and Paris. The most significant milestone occurred in February 2020, when Affle (International) Limited, a leading consumer intelligence technology company listed on the Indian stock exchanges, announced its acquisition of a 100% stake in Mediasmart. The deal was valued at approximately EUR 5.12 million (roughly USD 5.6 million), which included a combination of upfront cash and contingent consideration based on performance over four years. This acquisition was a strategic move by Affle to establish a strong presence in Europe and Latin America and to integrate Mediasmart's proximity marketing capabilities into its broader 'CPCU' (Cost Per Converted User) business model. The backing of a publicly-traded parent company has since enabled Mediasmart to accelerate its R&D and global market penetration.

The product offerings of mediasmart are centered around a unified, omnichannel programmatic platform that caters to four primary marketing pillars. First is **Impactful Mobile Ads**, which provides global access to premium in-app and mobile web inventory with advanced segmentation. Second is **Connected TV (CTV) Sync**, which utilizes the proprietary Household Sync technology to link big-screen TV ads with personal mobile devices, driving higher engagement and app downloads. Third is **Proximity Marketing**, a specialized solution that uses geofencing and real-time footfall tracking to measure the incremental lift of drive-to-store campaigns. Fourth is the recently expanded **DOOH with Audience Sync**, which bridges the offline-online gap by allowing advertisers to retarget users on their mobile devices who have been exposed to specific digital billboards. All of these offerings are accessible via an intuitive self-serve console or a set of robust, open APIs. The platform also includes an integrated Creative Studio, which features a partnership with Nexd to enable the creation of interactive, high-performance rich media ad units directly within the dashboard, removing the need for external design tools.

Since its acquisition by Affle in 2020, mediasmart has undergone a significant geographic and technological expansion. Originally focused on the European markets with offices in Madrid, London, and Paris, the platform has successfully leveraged Affle's global footprint to enter emerging markets in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and India. A key area of expansion has been the Middle East, where Mediasmart serves the GCC region (UAE, Saudi Arabia, etc.) through Affle's regional hubs, such as its Dubai office. Technologically, the platform has expanded beyond its mobile roots to become a true omnichannel player. In 2021 and 2022, it launched major updates to its CTV and DOOH capabilities, specifically focusing on cross-screen synchronization. This expansion strategy is aimed at capturing the 'hyper-connected' consumer who moves seamlessly between outdoor environments, shared household screens, and personal mobile devices. The company's growth is also evidenced by its consistent recognition in the industry, having won multiple awards at the MMA Smarties and exchange4media awards for its innovative use of emerging technologies in new markets.

mediasmart has maintained a rapid release cadence over the last 18 months, focusing on creative efficiency and omnichannel integration. A major recent milestone was the **integration with Nexd CMP** within the Mediasmart Creative Studio. This feature allows advertisers to build lightweight, interactive rich media ads using a drag-and-drop interface directly in the DSP console, significantly reducing production time and improving ad viewability. Another significant addition is the **DOOH Audience Sync** capability, which enables real-time synchronization between digital outdoor ads and mobile retargeting, creating a closed-loop attribution model for outdoor media. The platform also recently upgraded its **Household Sync** logic to provide better precision in linking CTV devices with individual smartphones, and introduced a patent-pending solution to maximize user awareness by identifying moments when users are most likely to interact with ads. Furthermore, enhancements to the real-time incrementality dashboard now provide deeper insights into 'lift' metrics, allowing for more granular optimization of proximity campaigns based on specific store-level data.

The culture at mediasmart is defined by a blend of Spanish startup innovation and the global scale of the Affle group. The company prides itself on being 'born for mobile,' which translates into a fast-paced, tech-centric work environment where engineers and advertising experts collaborate closely. A core cultural value is 'Transparency,' which is reflected not only in the self-serve nature of their product but also in their open communication with clients and partners. The company emphasizes a 'Privacy by Design' approach, making data ethics and user protection a foundational part of every employee's mindset. Working at mediasmart involves being part of a diverse, international team that spans multiple time zones, fostering a multicultural environment that values different perspectives. Despite being part of a larger corporate entity, Mediasmart has retained a nimble, innovative spirit, often referred to as 'passionate technologists' who are committed to solving complex ad-tech challenges. The company also focuses on culture initiatives that promote continuous learning, as seen in their frequent webinars and documentation efforts aimed at educating the broader programmatic community.

mediasmart maintains a strong presence within the global advertising and technology community. It is an active member of industry bodies such as the **MMA (Mobile Marketing Association)** and **IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau)**, where it frequently contributes to setting industry standards, particularly regarding mobile and CTV privacy (as IAB Global Vendor 193). The company engages its user community through a comprehensive **Knowledge Base and Developer Portal**, providing extensive documentation for its APIs and console features. Mediasmart is also a frequent participant and award-winner at major industry events; for instance, it won 6 awards at the MMA Smarties India 2022 and multiple accolades at the exchange4media Real-Time Programmatic Advertising Awards. These awards highlight the company's collaboration with major brands like Papa John's, Schneider, and various global agencies. While it does not host a traditional public forum, it maintains a strong online presence via its 'Programmatic Blog,' where it shares success stories, industry trends, and deep dives into technology like CTV and incrementality, fostering a community of data-driven marketers who are looking to stay at the cutting edge of programmatic advertising.
