Floreant POS
By OROCUBE LLC
Floreant POS, first deployed in 2009, is an enterprise-grade, open-source point-of-sale system tailored for restaurants, cafés, bars, and small retail operations. Developed and maintained by OROCUBE LLC, it is distributed under the MRPL 1.2 license—offering full freedom to modify, use, and redistribute the software with no vendor lock-in.
Originally created to meet internal needs within a restaurant chain (including Denny’s), Floreant POS was released publicly in 2009 by its founder with partial donor support. By 2014, it was among Google’s top three open-source POS projects, achieving 166,000 downloads and powering over 25,000 active stores by 2016. In 2017, Capterra recognized it among the top ten open-source POS systems.
In 2014, OROCUBE established an office in Lexington, South Carolina, transitioning from a grassroots project into a stable commercial open-source business. By 2015, the company had formalized management and expanded sales and support operations.
Floreant POS has been primarily self-funded by its founder, with occasional donations—there are no records of venture capital or external investment. As an open-source initiative backed by a small commercial entity, it does not carry a traditional corporate valuation
Floreant POS delivers a powerful suite of tools including intuitive order management (dine-in, takeout, delivery), table layout visualizations, kitchen integration (printers, stickers, KDS), split-tickets, tip and cash drawer handling, robust reporting (sales, gratuity, payroll), and a flexible plugin architecture that accommodates inventory, barcode logic, gift cards, floor plan, and delivery modules.
The platform supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and even Raspberry Pi while functioning fully offline, with a minimalistic ZIP-based installation. Customization is enabled via JasperReports templates and a modular plugin framework.
There’s no public record of Floreant acquiring other companies or product lines. Instead, its growth has been organic—adding capabilities and plugins internally through OROCUBE or via community contributions.
The platform evolves continuously, with new features added via user feedback and daily code updates. A publicly available roadmap and project documentation guide its development. Ongoing enhancements include plugin ecosystem expansion, improved hardware compatibility, UI refinements, and advanced reporting—all managed by OROCUBE.
OROCUBE and the Floreant POS community embody values rooted in open-source freedom, transparency, and user-centric design. According to their guidance, the project's purpose is to deliver high-quality restaurant management interfaces, keep the software free forever, and prioritize community-led incremental development. Organizational goals emphasize usability, code quality, performance, and freedom of access.
Recognizing open-source constraints, the company balances innovation with sustainability by offering optional commercial services layered atop the free core.
As of recent data, Floreant POS is deployed in 30,000+ restaurants across 25 countries, with over 196,000 downloads via SourceForge and high adoption through channels like CNET and ZDNet. It continues to receive strong community engagement and positive feedback via forums and review platforms.
The project's GitHub/code repository and user discussions serve as hubs for community collaboration, troubleshooting, and plugin sharing. Its sustained relevance since 2009 demonstrates a robust, engaged user base even without formal venture backing.
