Overview of Fedora Workstation Software Company

Fedora Workstation is a Linux desktop distribution designed for developers, students, and desktop users. It is a flagship edition of the Fedora Project, which serves as a community-driven platform for innovation in the open-source ecosystem. Fedora is sponsored and guided by Red Hat, Inc., a subsidiary of IBM.

Founding and Growth

Founded: The Fedora Project was launched in 2003.
Created as the community successor to Red Hat Linux (after Red Hat shifted focus to RHEL).
Fedora Workstation became a distinct edition with the Fedora 21 release in 2014.
It quickly became known for cutting-edge innovation and being the upstream source for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

Funding and Valuation

Funded by Red Hat: Red Hat contributes engineering resources and infrastructure.
Fedora itself is not a company and has no valuation — it's a non-profit, community-governed open-source project.
Red Hat (Fedora’s main sponsor) was acquired by IBM in 2019 for $34 billion, indicating the commercial value of the broader ecosystem Fedora contributes to.

Fedora Workstation includes:

GNOME Desktop: Clean, stock GNOME experience with latest upstream releases.
DNF Package Manager: Powerful command-line package management.
Toolbox & Podman: For container-based development.
Flatpak support: Integrated for sandboxed apps.
SELinux: Built-in security framework.
Wayland Display Server: Default session, pioneering modern graphics stack.

- Kinoite: KDE version of Silverblue.
