Apteryx Imaging
By Planet DDS
Apteryx Imaging Inc., rooted in LED Medical Diagnostics, rebranded in September 2019 to reflect its focus on open‑architecture dental imaging software and devices like TUXEDO sensors and VELscope oral screening systems
As LED Medical Diagnostics, the core Apteryx brand emerged in the dental imaging space (XrayVision, VELscope) well before 2019.
Apteryx/XrayVision had broad adoption—including large DSOs and government providers—delivering over 90,000 imaging licenses by 2019.
Apteryx was originally part of LEDs, with no traditional VC rounds under its independent brand.
The CAD 0.65/share all‑cash acquisition by Planet DDS (a Level Equity‑backed company) took Apteryx private in August 2020.
XrayVision: Legacy imaging platform available in desktop/on‑premise versions, historically with broad sensor and DSO support (promoted as over 90,000 licenses issued)
XVWeb Cloud Imaging: Cloud-native, sensor‑agnostic web application allowing capture, viewing, editing, annotation, and secure sharing, with unlimited cloud storage, browser-based UI, HIPAA compliance, offline mode, DICOM support and API connectivity with popular PMS systems like Denticon
Open Architecture / Device-Agnostic: Works with virtually any imaging hardware (sensors, CBCT scanners), saving in DICOM format for interoperability Planet DDS.
Advanced Editing & Tools: Support for volume rendering, curved pan reconstructions, implant planning, nerve tracing, clinical filters, measurement tools, etc.; plus analytics dashboards for workflow insights
Offline Mode: Allows image capture without internet, with automatic sync when back online
The key acquisition here was by Planet DDS in August 2020; Apteryx became the default imaging platform for Planet’s customers.
Planet DDS continued expanding imaging AI via partnership with Overjet in December 2022 for bone quantification and advanced decay detection on XVWeb and Denticon systems.
AI-powered imaging: Overjet integration delivers real-time, chairside AI annotations—quantifying bone loss, outlining decay—leading to improved diagnostics and insurance claim efficacy (~21 % case acceptance lift)
Cloud-first scaling: XVWeb’s unlimited offsite storage, SOC 2 Type II cert, advanced security, disaster recovery and automatic updates all boost reliability and scalability
3D CBCT support: XVWeb now handles CBCT in the cloud—including curved slice, implant planning, measurement—without local heavy computing
Under Planet DDS, the mission centers on innovation, customer-centric design, open architecture, and cloud transformation of dental imaging and practice management infrastructure.
Apteryx’s brand ethos emphasizes device freedom, interoperability, clinical accuracy, and robust support, including lifetime support and unlimited service tickets with subscription.
