Amazon CloudFront
By Amazon Web Services, Inc
Amazon CloudFront is a fully managed content delivery network (CDN) from Amazon Web Services that speeds up the distribution of static and dynamic web content, APIs, and streaming media by serving requests from a worldwide network of edge locations and regional caches connected through the AWS global backbone. When a viewer requests an object, CloudFront routes the request to the lowest‑latency edge location; if the object is cached there, it’s delivered immediately, otherwise CloudFront fetches it from the configured origin—such as Amazon S3, MediaPackage, an Application Load Balancer, EC2, or even a custom HTTP server—and caches it for subsequent requests. This architecture reduces the number of networks a user’s request traverses, improving time‑to‑first‑byte and overall transfer rates while increasing reliability via distributed caching. Feature‑wise, CloudFront focuses on performance, security, programmability, and observability. On performance, automated network mapping and intelligent routing leverage a large global footprint of points of presence (PoPs) to cut latency for users in virtually any geography, and Origin Shield can further raise cache hit ratios by adding a consolidation layer between edges and origin. For dynamic content and APIs, CloudFront supports protocols like HTTPS, gRPC, and WebSockets with edge termination to optimise connection handling. Security is embedded: traffic is encrypted with TLS, custom certificates are managed through AWS Certificate Manager, and CloudFront integrates with AWS Shield Standard for DDoS protection at no extra charge and with AWS WAF for application‑layer defence. Access can be enforced using signed URLs or signed cookies, field‑level encryption, origin access controls for S3, and VPC origins that limit exposure of private applications to CloudFront only. CloudFront also provides serverless compute at the edge. Developers can run lightweight JavaScript with CloudFront Functions for ultra‑low‑latency request/response manipulation, or deploy Lambda@Edge for more advanced logic like authentication, redirects, header normalisation, and on‑the‑fly personalisation without managing servers in multiple regions. This programmability lets teams tailor caching, routing, and security per request, and even route to multiple origins based on geography, headers, or query parameters. Observability and operations are supported through extensive reporting and logging. The console offers usage reports, cache statistics, popular objects, and top referrers; CloudFront sends detailed metrics to Amazon CloudWatch and supports alarms on error rates or throughput. Standard logs can be delivered to S3 for analysis with Amazon Athena, while real‑time logs stream into Kinesis Data Streams for near‑instant troubleshooting. CloudTrail captures API activity, and configuration tracking is available via AWS Config. Together, these tools help optimise TTLs, cache behaviours, and invalidations to balance cost and performance. Pricing is pay‑as‑you‑go with no upfront commitments, and CloudFront offers zero fees for data transfer out from AWS origins such as S3, Elastic Load Balancing, and API Gateway, plus an AWS Free Tier that includes up to 1 TB per month of data transfer out and millions of requests for eligible accounts. For reliability, AWS commits to a 99.9% monthly uptime percentage under the CloudFront Service Level Agreement, with service credits if the commitment is not met. These economics, combined with tight integration across AWS services, make CloudFront compelling for workloads ranging from media streaming and e‑commerce to software distribution and IoT updates.
CloudFront’s strongest competitive advantage is native integration with the broader AWS ecosystem. For organizations already using S3 for static assets, ALB/EC2 for applications, and API Gateway or Media Services for APIs and video, CloudFront slots in with minimal friction: origins are preconfigured, data paths are optimized over the AWS backbone, and there are zero egress fees from these AWS origins to the CDN, which can materially reduce total cost of ownership compared to providers that charge origin‑to‑edge transfer. This “one‑cloud” operational model simplifies identity, security, observability, and automation because the same IAM, CloudWatch, and CloudFormation/CDK patterns apply across the stack. Programmability at the edge is another differentiator. While leading CDNs offer edge compute, CloudFront combines CloudFront Functions for micro‑latency header and URL manipulation with Lambda@Edge for more complex logic, both integrated with AWS tooling. Developers can implement authentication flows, A/B routing, geobased origin selection, and content personalisation close to users without introducing another platform’s runtime, logging, and deployment pipeline. This reduces cognitive load and accelerates delivery for teams standardising on AWS, particularly when edge logic needs to coordinate with services like DynamoDB, Secrets Manager, or Cognito.
