d.velop AG is a premier European provider of enterprise content management (ECM) and business process management (BPM) software, headquartered in Gescher, Germany. Since its inception, the company has focused on the end-to-end digitalization of document-based business processes. Today, d.velop serves over 11,000 customers and more than 5 million users worldwide. The company is characterized by its strong market position in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and its expanding international footprint through a network of over 400 specialized partners. d.velop’s strategic vision centers on a unified cloud platform that combines AI-driven document services, digital signatures, and automated workflows to connect people and organizations securely and efficiently. In 2023, d.velop reported a revenue of approximately €112.1 million, underscoring its stability and growth as a key player in the digital transformation market. The company operates with a pan-European strategy, emphasizing data sovereignty and compliance as core differentiators.
The foundation of what is today d.velop AG was laid in 1992 by Christoph Pliete and Thilo Gukelberger with the founding of 'Ingenieurgesellschaft Pliete und Gukelberger I.P.G. GbR' in Gescher. Their first flagship product, 'd.3ecm', was a digital archive and document/workflow management solution that quickly gained traction. The brand name 'd.velop' was first used officially on October 23, 1996. The company underwent a significant structural evolution on January 1, 2000, when it transitioned into an Aktiengesellschaft (AG), a non-listed public limited company, formed through the merger of its earlier administrative and operational entities. Over the decades, the founders' vision of a paperless office evolved into a comprehensive digital platform strategy. In July 2025, the company marked a major leadership transition with Martin Greiwe becoming the Speaker of the Management Board, supported by CFO Dr. Stephan Held and CTO Nico Bäumer, ensuring the founders' legacy continues through a modern, growth-oriented leadership team.
d.velop AG is a privately held company owned by d.velop holding GmbH. Unlike many Silicon Valley-style software firms, d.velop has traditionally grown through sustainable reinvestment of its revenues and strategic organic growth rather than multiple venture capital rounds. This financial stability has allowed the company to reach an annual turnover exceeding €110 million without the pressure of public stock market volatility. However, the company has been active in M&A, acquiring and merging with several subsidiaries to strengthen its industry focus. Notable integrations include codia Software GmbH (specializing in the public sector) in 2018, which was later fully merged into d.velop AG in 2021. The group has also established specialized business divisions for healthcare, social services, and finance, often funded by internal growth capital. In recent years, d.velop has been recognized by Handelsblatt and other financial publications as one of Germany's 100 fastest-growing medium-sized companies.
The d.velop product ecosystem is centered around the 'd.velop platform,' which provides a variety of modular applications that can be combined to meet specific business needs. The core offering is 'd.velop documents,' a highly scalable enterprise content management system available in cloud, on-premises, and hybrid versions. 'd.velop process studio' serves as the orchestration layer for this ecosystem, providing the logic and automation required to move documents through business cycles. Other critical modules include 'd.velop sign' (a legally compliant e-signature solution), 'd.velop invoices' (specialized for automated AP processing), and 'd.velop postbox' (for secure digital document delivery). The company also offers the 'd.velop pilot,' an AI-based assistant that uses large language models (LLMs) to help users interact with documents via natural language. These offerings are available across multiple industry-specific editions, ensuring that highly regulated sectors like banking or public administration receive pre-configured compliance features.
Historically a regional champion in northwest Germany, d.velop has successfully expanded into a pan-European enterprise with a significant international presence. While Gescher remains the headquarters and heart of development, d.velop maintains offices and specialized hubs across Germany and has established strong roots in neighboring European markets. Its international growth strategy relies heavily on a global competence network comprising over 400 partners who provide local consulting, implementation, and support services. This partner-led model allows d.velop to serve customers in regions including the Nordics, Western Europe, and increasingly, international markets. In 2023, the company reorganized into specialized industry divisions (e.g., Public Sector, Health & Care, Banking & Finance) to better serve the specific regulatory and process requirements of diverse global markets. The company's inclusion as a 'Visionary' in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms reflects its growing international recognition and the maturity of its cloud-first strategy.
Recent development cycles for d.velop process studio have focused heavily on AI integration and developer experience. The '2025.Q4' release introduced a refreshed, intuitive design for the modeling interface, enhancing usability for no-code users. A major technical update in July 2025 upgraded the integrated scripting engine from Node.js version 18 to version 22, providing developers with improved performance, modern JavaScript features, and enhanced security for custom integrations. Additionally, the 'd.velop pilot' AI assistant has been more deeply embedded into the process studio, allowing for 'Agentic IDP' (Intelligent Document Processing). This enables workflows to automatically classify documents, extract complex metadata using LLMs, and even summarize content as a process step. Other recent enhancements include improved AD (Active Directory) connection options for user management and expanded libraries in the 'Template Library' to cover common environmental and sustainability reporting workflows (ESG).
The company culture at d.velop, often referred to as the 'd.velop DNA' or 'd.velop spirit,' is characterized by a blend of innovation, agility, and a family-like atmosphere. Despite its growth to 1,100+ employees, d.velop maintains flat hierarchies and promotes cross-functional, agile teams. Innovation is actively encouraged through internal initiatives like 'innovation2use,' where employees regularly present new project ideas to the entire company. The work environment is designed to be inclusive and flexible, offering hybrid work models and a focus on work-life balance. d.velop is also a signatory of the 'Charta der Vielfalt' (Diversity Charter), emphasizing a commitment to an inclusive workspace regardless of gender, identity, or background. Annual events like the 'd.velop tech con' bring developers together to share knowledge and foster community. This culture of transparency and mutual respect is cited as a key factor in the company’s high employee retention and its ability to attract top-tier tech talent in the DACH region.
d.velop fosters a vibrant community through several specialized channels. For developers and technical partners, the 'd.velop developer portal' provides exhaustive API documentation, tutorials, and a sandbox environment for building and testing custom apps. The 'd.velop academy' is the central learning hub, offering live training, certifications, and on-demand webinars for users, administrators, and consultants. Regular 'User Groups' and industry-specific networking events allow customers to exchange best practices and influence the product roadmap. The 'd.velop newsroom' and active social media presence on LinkedIn and Twitter keep the broader ecosystem informed of innovations and strategic alliances. For the general user base, the 'Help Center' provides a wealth of FAQs and 'getting started' guides. This multi-layered community approach ensures that everyone from a no-code business user to a backend developer has the resources and peer support needed to maximize the value of the d.velop platform.
