AWS IoT Device Defender

AWS IoT Device Defender is a fully managed security service designed to protect IoT devices connected to AWS IoT Core. It continuously audits device-related resources such as X.509 certificates, IoT policies, and Client IDs against AWS IoT security best practices. This auditing process helps identify configurations that are out of compliance, such as multiple devices using the same identity or overly permissive policies that could allow unauthorized access. By ensuring that devices adhere to security best practices, Device Defender helps maintain a robust security posture across the IoT device fleet. Device Defender also monitors device behavior to detect anomalies that may indicate a compromise. It uses both rule-based and machine learning (ML) models to identify unusual activity. The "Rules Detect" feature allows users to define normal device behavior by setting up rules for specific security metrics, such as the number of listening TCP ports or authorization failure counts. In contrast, the "ML Detect" feature automatically sets device behaviors using ML models based on historical data, eliminating the need for manual rule definition. These models are continuously updated to reflect changing device behaviors, reducing false positives and ensuring accurate threat detection.

AWS IoT Device Defender can detect anomalies in device behavior using both rule-based and machine-learning models. The ML Detect feature automatically identifies normal device behaviors and updates them daily based on new data trends, reducing the need for manual configuration and minimizing false positives. This capability allows for the detection of operational and security anomalies without requiring predefined rules, making it more adaptable to evolving IoT environments.
