Engine Yard employs several security measures to protect data:

1. Security Configurations:
   • Automatic configuration of security groups and firewalls to minimize exposure.
   • Regular stack updates for security patches and new functionality.
2. Data Protection:
   • Daily database backups rotated every 10 days.
   • Shared responsibility model for security, with customers owning and operating their instances.
3. Compliance and Training:
   • Security awareness training for new hires, covering data protection and common threats.
   • Background checks for new personnel, including criminal and social media history.

Engine Yard provides frequent updates and fixes:

1. Update Management:
   • Users can control and schedule application updates.
   • Regular updates for security patches and improvements.

1. Data Ownership:
   • Customers own and operate their instances, including full administrative access, similar to managing a server in a data center.
   • This ownership implies that customers are responsible for their data, including its security and compliance with relevant regulations.
2. Data Portability:
   • Engine Yard supports data portability, allowing customers to transfer their data to other platforms if needed. This is facilitated by the ability to export data and the use of common technical standards to ensure interoperability.
   • The shared responsibility model allows customers to enhance their security and meet more stringent compliance requirements, which can include data portability measures.

Engine Yard provides flexible scaling options to meet changing organizational needs:

1. Auto-Scaling:
   • Engine Yard environments can be horizontally scaled automatically based on specific criteria, such as application load or performance metrics.
   • This auto-scaling feature allows the number of application instances to increase or decrease automatically, ensuring optimal resource utilization and cost efficiency.
2. Manual Scaling:
   • Customers can also manually adjust the number of instances or resources allocated to their applications through the Engine Yard dashboard.

Engine Yard's terms for contract renewal and cancellation include several key points:

1. Auto-Renewal:
   • Contracts may include auto-renewal clauses, which automatically renew the contract unless the customer provides notice to cancel.
   • Customers should be informed about the auto-renewal terms, including the length of the contract, how the subscription will renew, and any price increases on renewal.
2. Cancellation:
   • Customers typically need to provide notice to cancel the contract, often 90 days before the renewal date.
   • Unclear or ambiguous terms regarding cancellation can be deemed unfair, and businesses are encouraged to make the cancellation process straightforward and transparent.
3. Exit Fees:
   • Exit fees may be charged if a customer cancels the contract before the end of the agreed term. These fees should not be excessive and should be clearly outlined in the contract.

Engine Yard meets several compliance standards to ensure the security and integrity of customer data:

1. ISO 27002 2005 Standard:
   • Engine Yard's internal assessment aligns with the ISO 27002 2005 Standard control objectives, ensuring robust information security practices.
2. AWS Security Standards:
   • As Engine Yard is built on top of Amazon Web Services (AWS), it leverages AWS's security measures, including virtualization layer security, network security, and physical and environmental security.
3. Shared Responsibility Model:
   • The shared responsibility model between Engine Yard, its IaaS providers, and customers ensures that security responsibilities are clearly defined and managed across different domains.
