Nextcloud

Nextcloud is an open-source platform that provides a self-hosted suite of client-server software for creating and using file hosting services. It allows individuals and organizations to securely store, share, and collaborate on files and data, similar to services like Google Drive or Dropbox, but with more control over data privacy. Nextcloud offers features such as document collaboration, calendar and contacts integration, and enterprise-level security, making it ideal for both personal and enterprise use. It can be deployed on private servers, ensuring full control over data and compliance with various regulatory requirements.

Nextcloud was founded in June 2016 by Frank Karlitschek and a group of open-source entrepreneurs and engineers who left ownCloud Inc. The company was established to empower users with control over their data and communication through open-source solutions. Since its inception, Nextcloud has experienced significant growth, achieving profitability by the end of 2016 and expanding its team to over 100 members by December 2023.

Nextcloud has pursued an organic growth strategy, being fully employee-funded. This approach has allowed the company to maintain independence and focus on long-term sustainability rather than short-term financial gains.

Nextcloud offers a comprehensive suite of tools for online storage, data synchronization, collaboration, video conferencing, and groupware. It supports multiple operating systems including Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Key features include file access control, workflow automation, chat and video conferencing capabilities, and integration with office suites like OnlyOffice.

Nextcloud has expanded its product offerings through partnerships rather than acquisitions. For example, it integrated the OnlyOffice suite to compete with platforms like Office 365 and Google Docs. The company has also focused on enhancing its platform with new features such as the Nextcloud Whiteboard for collaborative planning.

Recent additions to Nextcloud's feature set include digital whiteboards for collaborative workspaces and ethical AI capabilities designed to protect user data privacy.

Nextcloud emphasizes values such as sustainability, privacy, security, user-centered design, trust, open source development, decentralization, inclusion, and diversity. The company fosters a culture that prioritizes long-term stability over short-term profits and aims to create positive impacts through its open-source projects.

Nextcloud boasts a large user base with over 20 million users globally across tens of thousands of servers. The community is active with over 1,500 code contributors and a vibrant forum community. The platform is particularly popular among enterprises seeking self-hosted solutions for data privacy and compliance.
