Wisely, now part of Olo (NYSE: OLO), is a leading software-as-a-service company that has redefined how the restaurant industry handles customer data. Headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a secondary hub at Olo’s New York headquarters, Wisely has positioned itself as the 'mission control' for high-growth restaurant brands. The company's vision is to help restaurants move away from a transaction-heavy mindset toward a guest-centric strategy, emphasizing Customer Lifetime Value (CLV). Following its 2021 acquisition by Olo, Wisely has integrated deeply with Olo's commerce and delivery engine, creating a massive data ecosystem that serves over 75,000 restaurant locations. The company stands out for its high-touch customer success model and its commitment to data ownership for brands, ensuring that restaurants—not third-party marketplaces—hold the keys to their guest relationships. Its market position is currently that of an enterprise-grade leader, serving many of the fastest-growing chains in the casual and fast-casual dining segments.
Wisely was founded in 2013 by a team of entrepreneurs in Ann Arbor, Michigan, led by CEO Mike Vichich along with co-founders Tyler Felous, Arjuna Iyer, and Joshua Stern. The company's origins were rooted in a mobile app designed to help consumers track their favorite venues, but it quickly pivoted to a B2B SaaS model after identifying a critical gap in how restaurants managed guest data. The founders realized that while retailers had sophisticated CRMs, restaurants were still relying on paper waitlists or 'black box' reservation systems that didn't talk to the POS. Over the next several years, the team worked hand-in-hand with early partners like Barcelona Wine Bar to build a platform that treated the host stand as the center of data collection. This obsession with operational reality led to the development of the 'Host' app and eventually the restaurant industry's first purpose-built CDP. By the time of its acquisition, Wisely had grown from a small startup to a crucial piece of the national restaurant technology infrastructure, consistently appearing on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies.
Wisely's financial journey is highlighted by a strategic and highly successful exit. In its early years, the company raised approximately $1.64 million in seed funding across several rounds. Key early investors included Ripple Ventures (who led a $1.14 million seed round in 2019), Timber Grove Ventures, Maple Leaf Angels, and OneEleven. Other notable participants in Wisely's funding history include Yodlee and various angel investors. The company’s trajectory shifted dramatically on October 21, 2021, when Olo Inc. (NYSE: OLO), the restaurant commerce giant, announced it would acquire Wisely for approximately $187 million. The deal consisted of $77 million in cash and $110 million in Olo’s Class A common stock. This acquisition was Olo's first as a public company and served as a massive validation of Wisely’s 'Customer Intelligence' category. The funding provided by the acquisition has allowed Wisely to accelerate its product roadmap, particularly in AI-driven predictive analytics and cross-platform data integration.
The Wisely product suite is divided into several high-impact modules designed to work together. The 'Host' application is the operational foundation, providing waitlist management, reservations, and AI-powered table management to ensure optimal seat utilization. The 'CRM' module serves as a centralized hub for guest profiles, pulling in data from POS systems like Toast and Aloha to track every order and visit. The 'Marketing Automation' engine allows brands to use this CRM data to send highly targeted, automated SMS and email campaigns. A flagship offering is the 'Wisely CDP' (Customer Data Platform), which unifies disparate data silos into a single source of truth, allowing departments like finance and culinary to use guest data for high-level decision making. Finally, the 'Guest Sentiment' module offers a sophisticated feedback loop, tracking internal surveys and external reviews (Yelp, Google, etc.) to give managers a real-time pulse on operational performance. These offerings are designed to be 'modular,' meaning a restaurant can start with just the Host app and scale up to the full CDP and Marketing suite as they grow.
Historically focused on the North American market, Wisely has seen significant geographic and brand expansion following its merger with Olo. The platform now supports thousands of locations across the United States and Canada, including major enterprise accounts like Global Franchise Group, Chuy’s, First Watch, and Lazy Dog. While Olo is a U.S.-based company, its platform supports brands with international footprints, such as P.F. Chang's, which has a massive presence in the GCC region (Middle East). Wisely's localization efforts have primarily focused on meeting the complex regional tax and data compliance needs of its large multi-unit clients in North America. Recently, the company has expanded its partnerships to include global delivery and marketplace providers, ensuring that data from international orders can be funneled back into the Wisely CRM. The strategy continues to prioritize 'Enterprise' expansion, targeting large-scale restaurant groups that require a unified platform to manage data across multiple time zones and regions.
In the last 18 months, Wisely has released several significant updates aimed at increasing automation and guest personalization. A major addition is 'List Assist,' a feature that uses automated SMS sequences to manage the waitlist, reducing the manual burden on hosts and lowering no-show rates. The company also launched a completely redesigned 'Email Builder,' featuring drag-and-drop modules that allow marketing teams to create high-conversion templates in minutes. Recent updates to the 'SmartQuote' algorithm have further improved wait time accuracy by incorporating more granular POS data, such as average meal duration by specific menu item. Another critical release is 'Smart Tags,' which allows restaurants to create automated visual identifiers for guests—such as a 'High Spender' or 'Lapsed Regular'—that appear immediately when a guest is searched at the host stand. Most recently, Wisely has expanded its library of webhooks, enabling deeper real-time integrations with third-party loyalty and payment providers, further cementing its position as an open, extensible data hub.
Wisely’s company culture is deeply rooted in its Ann Arbor tech heritage and its 'Restaurateur First' philosophy. Even after the Olo acquisition, the team has maintained a culture of operational empathy, often spending time in the 'trenches' of partner restaurants to understand the friction points of a busy Saturday night shift. The values emphasize innovation, transparency, and a high level of accountability to client ROI. Under Olo’s leadership, the company has embraced a remote-friendly work environment while maintaining a strong collaborative hub in Michigan. The company is also noted for its focus on engineering excellence and data science, led by industry veterans who prioritize scalable, reliable infrastructure. DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts are a core part of the larger Olo organization, with numerous 'belonging groups' and initiatives designed to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. This 'People First' culture is often cited by employees and partners as a key reason for the company’s high retention and strong partnership relationships.
Wisely has built a vibrant community of restaurant operators and marketing professionals through its regular 'Customer Intelligence Summits' and whitepaper series. These events bring together CMOs and COOs from brands like Union Square Hospitality Group and First Watch to share best practices on using data to drive growth. The company maintains an active developer ecosystem through its open API and webhook library, allowing third-party tech providers to build onto the Wisely platform. Community engagement also happens through the 'Wisely Blog' and social channels, where the company frequently shares data-driven insights on industry trends, such as shifting diner behaviors post-pandemic. Furthermore, Wisely provides a robust 'Knowledge Base' and certification paths for restaurant managers to become experts in Customer Intelligence. This focus on education and shared success has created a loyal user base that views Wisely not just as a software vendor, but as a strategic partner in the digital transformation of the hospitality industry.
