Overview of Rive Software Company

Rive is a real-time animation software company that enables designers and developers to create interactive graphics and animations. The platform is designed to streamline the process of building production-ready UI and graphics, making it easier for teams to iterate quickly and produce high-quality results.

Founding and Growth

Rive was founded in 2016 by identical twin brothers Guido and Luigi Rosso. The brothers have a background in both design and development, which they leveraged to create a tool that bridges the gap between these two disciplines. Initially known as Flare and later 2Dimensions, the company rebranded to Rive and has since grown to a team of 49 employees as of 2024.

Funding and Valuation

Rive has raised a total of $25.8 million over two funding rounds. The most recent Series A round, held on November 30, 2022, raised $23.8 million and was led by IDC Ventures. Other notable investors include Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Two Sigma Ventures, and Abstract Ventures. The company is privately held and venture capital-backed.

Product Offerings and Features

Rive offers a comprehensive suite of features designed for creating interactive animations and graphics:

State Machines: Create interactivity visually using animations as states.
Transitions and Listeners: Connect animations with transitions and define their conditions, making graphics respond to hovers, clicks, taps, and more.
Responsive Layouts and Scrolling: Build components that dynamically reflow and resize, and create vertical, horizontal, or multi-directional scrolling with physics.
Dynamic Assets and Audio: Dynamically load and control any asset (fonts, images, and audio) at runtime, and add user-triggered sound effects to interactive graphics.
Timeline and Interpolation: Animate any property with Rive's comprehensive timeline and create natural-looking motion with interpolation (easing).
Graph Editor and Vector Feathering: View and edit interpolation curves on the timeline, and add feathering for performant vector glows and shadows.
N-Slicing and Layouts: Resize images without deforming them and create responsive layouts that adapt to different screen sizes.
Rive Renderer: An open-source renderer available on all platforms, boosting performance.

Acquisitions and Product Expansion

Rive has not publicly announced any acquisitions. However, the company has significantly expanded its product offerings and integrations. In 2024, Rive introduced support for Unity, Unreal, and Defold, and open-sourced its in-house Rive Renderer. The platform also added visionOS and tvOS support to its Apple runtime.

Rive AI and New Features

Rive continuously updates its platform with new features. Recent additions include:

Audio Events: Play short sound effects using Rive’s state machines and timelines.
Responsive Layouts and N-Slicing: Techniques borrowed from the gaming world to resize images without deforming them.
