Firebase Studio is Google’s latest cloud-based, AI-powered development environment, designed to accelerate the entire lifecycle of building, testing, and deploying production-quality full-stack AI applications. Announced in April 2025 at Google Cloud Next, Firebase Studio represents the evolution and unification of several Google developer tools—most notably Project IDX, Genkit, and Gemini in Firebase—into a single, agentic platform accessible entirely from the browser. Its mission is to streamline and democratize app development, enabling everyone from non-technical users to experienced engineers to build modern web, mobile, and backend applications with unprecedented speed and minimal friction.
Firebase began as a San Francisco-based startup in 2011, founded by James Tamplin and Andrew Lee. It originated from Envolve, a chat API service that developers repurposed for real-time data synchronization. Recognizing this broader use case, Tamplin and Lee launched Firebase as a backend-as-a-service (BaaS) platform, debuting the Firebase Realtime Database in 2012.
Seed round: $1.1 million (May 2012).
Series A: $5.6 million (June 2013).
Firebase powers over 70 billion app instances daily, serving millions of developers globally, from solo hackers and students to startups and large enterprises. The launch of Firebase Studio is expected to further expand this base by making full-stack, AI-powered app development accessible to a broader audience, including non-technical users and cross-functional teams.
