Atlassian was founded in 2002 by Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, two college friends from the University of New South Wales. They started the company with a vision to create a work environment where they could be authentic and avoid traditional corporate structures. The company initially bootstrapped its operations, using a $10,000 credit card debt for funding. Atlassian has since grown into a global enterprise with over 10,000 employees across 13 countries.

Atlassian's growth was initially fueled by its unique approach to capital efficiency, using a freemium model to keep costs low. In 2010, the company raised $60 million from Accel Partners. Atlassian went public in December 2015 on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol TEAM, with a market cap of approximately $4.37 billion at the time of its IPO. As of March 2019, Atlassian's valuation had reached $26.6 billion.
