What is Scrum Software?

Scrum Software is a project management tool used to execute the Scrum method. These tools provide a framework to develop, deliver, and sustain complex products. In Scrum, a product is built of a series of related tasks called sprints, which break a complex process into individual pieces; each sprint is a time-boxed period during which the related task needs to be completed. Users across departments collaborate to complete a sprint and send it back to the product owner for review. Scrum software helps teams organize, iterate, and continuously improve the products or projects they are working on, until they meet the expectations of all stakeholders.

• Faster delivery of projects: In the Scrum framework, stakeholders from different teams work together on every sprint. Scrum software fosters communication and collaboration across departments and helps deliver individual tasks and projects faster.
• Minimize risk by catching problems early: Scrum software lets teams complete a project in small increments with continuous feedback on each completed sprint. It helps identify risks and roadblocks with each small step. Teams can address issues in a timely and organized manner, thus minimizing the possibility of a small problem snowballing into a project-wrecking one.
• Continuous feedback leads to better product quality: Scrum’s framework of continuous review and feedback allows product owners and clients to provide ongoing input, and Scrum software helps manage this feedback (e.g., change requests) to ensure products are built per client demand, thus enhancing client satisfaction.

Typical features of Scrum Software

• Prioritization: Rank and score product backlogs, and prioritize accordingly.  
• Sprint planning: Determine actionable product backlogs within a sprint and make plans to complete them within the allocated time.
• Task management: Distribute projects into a series of tasks and manage their execution throughout their lifecycle.
• Progress tracking: Track the status of projects and individual sprints.
• Collaboration board: Set up a sprint board to facilitate communication, discuss progress, and manage team/individual coordination.
• Milestone tracking: Set and track project-related deadlines and accomplishments for better project management.

The cost of Scrum Software

Most products in the market are priced on a “per user, per month” basis and can be divided into three pricing tiers based on their starting price.

The above list summarizes pricing for the base plans of most products. An enterprise or premium product that is priced higher may include additional features such as unlimited users and sprints, third-party apps and integrations, and priority support.

Considerations when purchasing Scrum Software

• Whether Scrum is right for your business: Scrum is typically suitable for small teams working on dynamic projects with changing deliverables and a limited idea of the end product (e.g., software development requests). The Scrum framework works best when you need to frequently interact with clients and end users to get their feedback on every modification/update until the product is acceptable. It’s not ideal for teams with static and standardized deliverables. Before investing in Scrum software, it's imperative that you determine whether or not the Scrum methodology will work for your team. 
• Try free options before you purchase: Scrum is a complex framework and requires significant training and practice to build expertise. If you’re a small business with limited resources, begin with free Scrum software, or start with a vendor's basic plan. That way, you can check whether Scrum software is worth the investment for you and your team.
• Whether you need a project management suite or standalone Scrum software: Most project management software suites offer Scrum templates along with other project management methodologies and tools (e.g., Kanban, Waterfall). Whether or not you need a full suite or standalone Scrum software depends on the variety of projects you handle. If all of your projects are client-oriented with changing deliverables and you have a well-trained Scrum team in place, opt for dedicated Scrum software. If not, consider a project management software suite instead.

Relevant Scrum Software trends

• Artificial intelligence (AI) will create virtual Scrum masters: The Scrum master plays a crucial role in implementing the Scrum method. Typically, these masters are team leads or project managers who create Scrum teams, plan roadmaps for sprints, and review them. As with all manual processes, there’s always the possibility of human error or bias. As AI continues its pervasive growth, expect to see businesses moving to virtual Scrum masters—AI-based processes that can complete tasks typically carried out by human Scrum masters.
