VerticalChange is a California-based technology firm dedicated to solving the complex data management challenges faced by the social service and public health sectors. Founded on the principle that 'human relationships and social impact matter,' the company provides a modern, scalable, and intuitive SaaS platform that replaces antiquated paper records and rigid spreadsheets. Since its inception, VerticalChange has positioned itself as a critical infrastructure partner for organizations ranging from public schools and local nonprofits to large-scale government initiatives like the City of Philadelphia's Department of Behavioral Health. The company is characterized by its deep domain expertise in human services, which informs every aspect of the software’s design, from its flexible data schema to its rigorous adherence to data privacy regulations. As an Advanced Public Sector Partner within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem, VerticalChange combines the agility of a focused software startup with the reliability and security of world-class cloud infrastructure.
The company was founded in 2012 by Jonathan Humfrey and Victor Christensen, who recognized a significant 'technology gap' in the social sector. Jonathan, serving as CEO, brought a background in social impact and leadership, while Victor, the Chief Architect, provided the technical vision necessary to build a platform that could handle virtually any data type without sacrificing usability. They spent 2012 working closely with a representative group of social service providers to ensure the platform met real-world needs. This collaborative 'user-first' approach led to the official launch of the VerticalChange platform in early 2013. The founding team’s mission was clear from day one: to empower agencies helping the most vulnerable community members—including those in education delivery, healthcare coordination, and homelessness prevention—by providing them with 'flexible, affordable, and easy-to-use tools' that had previously been reserved only for the corporate sector.
VerticalChange operates as a privately held entity. While the company has not publicly disclosed large venture capital rounds common in Silicon Valley (such as Series A/B/C), it has successfully grown through a combination of strategic private investments, founder-led initiatives, and a strong revenue-generating customer base. Their growth has been characterized by sustainable expansion and high customer retention within the public and social sectors. The company’s financial stability is further evidenced by its status as an Advanced AWS Partner, which requires passing rigorous business and technical audits. By focusing on organic growth and deep sector expertise rather than aggressive VC-fueled expansion, VerticalChange has maintained a client-centric culture that prioritizes the long-term mission of its users over short-term exit strategies, a quality highly valued by its nonprofit and government clients.
VerticalChange’s core offering is a cloud-based Case Management and CRM platform that is uniquely modular. The product suite is centered around the Dynamic Form Builder, which allows users to create infinite variations of intake forms, assessments, and surveys. Beyond basic data entry, the company offers specialized modules for Client Management (handling individuals, families, and groups), Program Management (tracking enrollments and eligibility), and Attendance Tracking (perfect for schools and workshops). One of their premier offerings is 'Visual VerticalChange,' a business intelligence module that provides advanced data visualization and dashboarding capabilities. For organizations requiring deep technical integration, VerticalChange offers direct SQL server access, enabling them to merge their social service data with other systems using Tableau or Power BI. These interconnected modules provide a '360-degree view' of client interactions and agency-wide performance.
While headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, VerticalChange has expanded its reach across the United States, serving diverse organizations from the East Coast to the West Coast. Their geographic expansion has been strategic, focusing on regions with high demands for social service coordination, such as Pennsylvania, Illinois, and California. They have successfully moved into various niche markets within the social sector, including Early Childhood Education (ECE), homelessness services (HMIS-related workflows), and public health initiatives. This expansion is supported by their 'Advanced Public Sector Partner' status with AWS, which allows them to scale their infrastructure rapidly as they take on larger government contracts. Their growth strategy involves a mix of direct sales and partnerships with educational and government entities, positioning them as a go-to solution for regional data-sharing initiatives and community collaborations.
In the 2024-2025 release cycle, VerticalChange has introduced several major platform enhancements aimed at efficiency and user experience. A highlight is the 'Pause Reporting' feature in the Report Builder, which allows users to configure complex filters and groupings without waiting for real-time data fetching, significantly speeding up the reporting process. The company also rolled out a revamped Dashboard UI, offering a cleaner, more intuitive landing page with personalized organizational branding and quick-access product update feeds. Security-wise, they have transitioned 'Visual VerticalChange' to Auth0 to support modern authentication protocols like Single Sign-On (SSO). Other recent updates include enhanced permission set copying, the introduction of 'Contact Subtype Dependencies' to create smarter data relationships, and a new look for the Form Builder interface designed to improve the drag-and-drop experience for non-technical users.
The culture at VerticalChange is defined by a deep passion for social impact and a collaborative spirit. The team consists of social service experts, software engineers, and customer success advocates who are dedicated to the motto 'You help people. Our software helps you.' This mission-driven focus is reflected in their work environment, which encourages empathy for the end-user and a problem-solving mindset. They value 'human relationships' as much as technical excellence, leading to a high-touch customer service model where users have direct access to live support. The company fosters a culture of transparency and continuous learning, often working 'with' rather than just 'for' their clients to co-design new features. This approach has created a workplace where team members feel a direct connection to the positive social outcomes—like ending homelessness or improving education—that their software facilitates.
VerticalChange maintains a vibrant community of social sector professionals through a variety of engagement channels. They provide an extensive online 'Help Center' with over 200 articles, videos, and glossary terms to ensure users can maximize the platform's potential. The company frequently publishes case studies, such as their work with Early Childhood Education (ECE) providers, to share best practices for outcome measurement with the wider sector. They are also active participants in the AWS Nonprofit and Public Sector ecosystems, often appearing at conferences and webinars to discuss the future of social service technology. Their community presence is further bolstered by their 'certification' and training workshops, where they help agency leaders become experts in data management. By participating in forums and maintaining a transparent 'Service Status' and 'Product Changes' log, they have built a reputation for accountability and community-led development within the social services technology landscape.
