Imgix is a visual media platform that manages, processes, optimizes, and delivers images and videos in real time via a URL‑based API and a global CDN. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in San Francisco, Imgix positions itself at the intersection of computer graphics and the web, offering rendering, video, and management APIs, plus AI‑powered visual editing and analytics. Public profiles and the company’s own “About”/“Meet Imgix” materials highlight daily delivery at significant scale, a focus on performance (Core Web Vitals), and a developer‑first approach with SDKs for major languages and frameworks.
On the product website and docs, Imgix emphasizes real‑time transformations (resize, crop, compression, format conversion to AVIF/WebP), responsive images (srcset/DPR), video processing, and a growing suite of AI tools (generative fill, background/object removal, super‑resolution), all accessible through simple URL parameters and supported by extensive libraries and plugins.
Imgix was founded by Chris Zacharias (former early YouTube web developer) in 2011. Zacharias’s background—creating YouTube’s HTML5 player and performance initiatives like “Feather”—directly informed Imgix’s mission to make the web faster through better visual media optimization. Multiple sources confirm the founding year and founder, along with San Francisco roots.
Corporate listings and public company profiles show continued operation as a private, venture‑backed company with San Francisco HQ at 423 Tehama Street; filings and directory entries corroborate this address and active status.
Public databases indicate that Imgix has raised funding across seed and Series A rounds and later debt financing:
Valuation specifics are not broadly disclosed; PitchBook provides structured funding history and cap table fragments but requires a subscription for full valuation data. Consequently, while one can confirm the stages and dates, the current valuation remains undisclosed/privately held in public sources.
Imgix’s platform comprises three primary APIs and surrounding tooling:
Documentation and ecosystem pages list SDKs for JavaScript/React, Python, Ruby, Go, Swift, Java, C#, and integrations for CMSs/frameworks (WordPress, Gatsby, Nuxt, Craft, Contentful, Strapi, Hygraph, Salesforce Commerce Cloud), reflecting a wide developer toolkit.

No publicly disclosed acquisitions for Imgix appear in mainstream startup databases; company expansion appears primarily organic through feature releases and broader media capabilities (not M&A). Crunchbase lists the company’s profile and funding but shows no acquisitions entries, consistent with other trackers. [crunchbase.com]
Product expansion has been noteworthy:
Imgix’s careers page outlines values such as “Win together,” a bias toward experimentation/action, and delighting users through ease and performance. Benefits include remote/hybrid work, flexible PTO, fully‑covered health benefits (US), 401k, parental leave, equity, and learning stipends—indicative of a modern, distributed culture.
Third‑party profiles describe the mission to improve the web via better image/video processing, and some directories list Imgix among “Top Workplaces,” albeit with varying external review quality typical of employer‑branding sites. Glassdoor culture Q&A entries (limited in count) and job boards corroborate aspects of autonomy and transparency, while acknowledging typical startup growth pains.
Imgix highlights adoption by brands such as Unsplash, Porsche, and Nikkei across press materials. A detailed Unsplash case study shows Imgix powering 350M images per month historically and enabling features like face‑aware avatar cropping (crop=faces) and responsive delivery for infinite scroll layouts—an emblematic example of the platform’s developer value.
Customer story collections feature Eventbrite, Upworthy, Shinola, and others; these references illustrate usage across e‑commerce, media, and content communities.
The docs ecosystem and active plugin/SDK landscape additionally signal a developer community that builds atop Imgix’s APIs, benefitting from sandbox testing, named integrations, and responsive image best practices.
