cPanel & WHM
بواسطة WebPros International L.L.C
cPanel, L.L.C. is the developer of the world's most ubiquitous web hosting control panel, cPanel & WHM. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, the company has defined the standards for web hosting automation since the late 1990s. In 2018, cPanel announced it would be acquired by a group led by Oakley Capital, which also owns Plesk and WHMCS under the 'WebPros' umbrella. This strategic unification brought the three most dominant forces in hosting management together, allowing for shared innovation while maintaining distinct product identities. Today, cPanel focuses on modernizing its technology stack to support cloud-native environments and providing a comprehensive ecosystem that includes website building (Sitejet), WordPress management (WP Toolkit), and billing automation (WHMCS). The company maintains a market-dominant position, particularly in the North American and European hosting markets, and is recognized for its high-performance stability and deep technical documentation.
The founding of cPanel dates back to 1996 when J. Nick Koston, a young developer, created the initial version as a control panel for Speed Hosting, a hosting provider in which he held a stake. Koston's vision was to simplify the complex CLI-based tasks required to manage a web server. Following a merger with Webking and subsequent agreements with Virtual Development Inc. (VDI), cPanel became a commercial entity in 1997. Over the following decade, Koston and his growing team in Houston transformed cPanel from a niche script into a global platform. The product survived the dot-com bubble and grew through a grassroots developer community that appreciated its Perl-based flexibility and the revolutionary WHM/cPanel split. By the mid-2000s, it had become the default choice for the emerging 'shared hosting' industry, setting the stage for its eventual acquisition by the WebPros group decades later.
For much of its history, cPanel operated as a highly successful, privately-owned company. The most pivotal financial milestone occurred in August 2018, when cPanel was acquired by a consortium led by Oakley Capital. This deal integrated cPanel into the WebPros platform, alongside other industry heavyweights like Plesk and WHMCS. While specific deal amounts for the cPanel acquisition were not publicly disclosed in isolation, the broader Oakley Capital fundings for WebPros have involved hundreds of millions of dollars in investment. In 2019, CVC Capital Partners subsequently acquired a majority stake in WebPros from Oakley Capital in a deal that valued the group—including cPanel—at a reported $1.5 billion. This influx of institutional capital has funded the aggressive modernization of the platform, the transition to account-based licensing, and the expansion into SaaS-style offerings like Sitejet.
cPanel & WHM offers four primary licensing tiers: Solo, Admin, Pro, and Premier. The 'Solo' license is designed for single-site owners and freelancers who need the power of cPanel on a VPS without the multi-user overhead. 'Admin' and 'Pro' cater to small-to-medium agencies managing 5 to 30 accounts respectively. The 'Premier' tier is the enterprise flagship, supporting up to 100 accounts with scalable per-account pricing for large clusters. Beyond the core panel, the offering includes 'WP Squared' (a managed WordPress solution), 'Sitejet Builder' (a professional website builder integrated directly into the panel), and 'cPanel DNSOnly' (a free tool for building dedicated DNS clusters). The platform also facilitates a vast marketplace of third-party 'Extensions' such as LiteSpeed Web Server, CloudLinux OS, and JetBackup, allowing providers to build highly customized, multi-layered hosting products.
Historically a US-centric brand, cPanel has expanded its global footprint through a massive network of over 2,500 'NOC Partners' (hosting providers) who distribute the software worldwide. The software is currently available in over 25 languages, including a robust Arabic localization that has made it the leading choice in the Middle East. Geographically, cPanel has maintained a dominant presence in North America, but through its parent company WebPros, it has established significant operational nodes in Europe (specifically Germany and Switzerland) and the Asia-Pacific region. The recent expansion strategy has focused on cloud-marketplaces, making cPanel available as a pre-configured image on AWS, Google Cloud, and DigitalOcean. This 'Cloud First' approach ensures that cPanel remains relevant as the industry moves away from traditional bare-metal hardware toward elastic, virtualized infrastructure.
In the last 18 months, cPanel & WHM has undergone a significant modernization effort. Key feature additions include 'Sitejet Builder,' a professional, drag-and-drop website builder that gives hosting providers a competitive response to SaaS builders like Wix or Squarespace. The 'WordPress Toolkit' has been upgraded to a native feature, providing automated security hardening and mass-updates for WP installations. Another major technical milestone was the full support for Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 LTS and AlmaLinux/Rocky Linux, providing a critical migration path following the end-of-life for CentOS. Additionally, cPanel introduced the 'Jupiter' theme, a modernized, mobile-responsive interface that replaced the legacy 'Paper Lantern' style. On the back end, enhancements to the 'Transfer Tool' have been made to support larger, complex migrations with minimal downtime, reflecting the company's focus on high-scale enterprise needs.
The company culture at cPanel is known for being 'technically rigorous yet community-focused.' Based in Houston, cPanel has long been recognized as a top workplace, offering a collaborative environment that values problem-solving and innovation. The 'cPanel way' involves a deep commitment to the hosting industry, often hiring experts directly from the hosting companies that use their software. The culture emphasizes transparency and professional development, exemplified by the 'cPanel University' which provides free training and certifications for staff and partners. Despite its growth and acquisition by WebPros, the Houston office remains the cultural heart of the brand, maintaining a 'work hard, play hard' ethos with frequent internal hackathons and a strong emphasis on work-life balance through hybrid work policies and comprehensive employee wellness programs.
cPanel boasts one of the largest and most active communities in the IT infrastructure space. The 'cPanel Forums' serve as a massive repository of collective knowledge where over 100,000 members share technical solutions and best practices. Beyond the forums, the company hosts the 'cPanel Conference' (and participates in 'WebPros Summit'), bringing together thousands of hosting professionals for networking and technical sessions. The company also maintains a 'Feature Request' portal where users can vote on upcoming development priorities, directly influencing the product roadmap. For developers, the 'cPanel & WHM Developer Portal' provides extensive API documentation and SDKs for building custom extensions. The ecosystem is further enriched by 'cPanel University,' which has certified tens of thousands of system administrators globally, ensuring a steady supply of professionals who are experts in the platform.
