What is Exam Software?

Exam Software is an online exam software tool that helps automate the examination management process. With the help of online exam software, users can add an instruction page, set a time limit, separate sections according to the type of questions, and schedule exams for individuals or groups, among other tasks. The proctoring feature of the software can record the exam takers' screen, audio, and video to ensure that all the rules are followed.

Exam software offers automatic grading features to assess the answers, prepare report cards, and share the results with online exam takers. Furthermore, the online exam software’s analytics feature provides actionable insights into performance, areas of improvement, strengths, and online exam duration. The performance insights help optimize teaching and improve learning for better exam results.

What are the key features of Exam Software?

• Assessment management: Plan and create an online assessment for exam takers and map it to the learning outcome. Monitor exam performance to analyze gaps in achieving the result.
• Question library: Curate a library of questions for the online exam. Pick questions from the library or add new questions. Archive questions that have been used multiple times or are no longer relevant to the subject.
• Automatic proctoring: Use features like facial recognition and track screen sharing to automate monitoring on the online exam software. Evaluating the exam takers' behavior with online proctoring will help prevent impersonation.
• Automatic grading: Display the result for every exam question after a response is submitted. Online exam takers can check the correctness of their answers and retake individual questions or the entire exam if required.
• Candidate management: Build, track, and maintain candidate profiles with the exams taken, scores, and overall performance. Connect with candidates on call or via chat to work around the assignments.

What are the types of Exam Software?

• Academic exam software tools: Educational institutions can conduct exams using an online exam software. The tool is an end-to-end solution for planning, organizing, and conducting online exams for students from different geographical locations. You can customize questions, automate grading, proctor exams remotely, and share the exam scores via email. The tool’s analytics feature lets you analyze students’ exam performance. The spaced learning feature can be used to improve the forgetful curve of learners. In this learning method, specific questions within the practice test are repeatedly asked at spaced intervals.
• Employee certification exam software tools: Businesses can conduct recruitment assessments, skill assessments, campus hiring, and training using online exam software. You can create an online exam with videos, images, background color, and a logo that reflects your brand and the exam theme. The tool offers various features, such as setting timers, randomizing questions, or allowing the employees to save the answers and submit them later. Create and share customized certificates with employees after they have completed the assessment. Pair it with a detailed performance analysis for strengths and weaknesses.

What are the benefits of Exam Software?

• Improve remote assessment management: Exam software can remotely manage assessments for students and employees. It allows you to share the question paper and exam schedule and the exam takers to submit answers. You can put time limits to answer each question or the entire question paper to ensure all the exam takers are assessed on the same parameters.
• Customize evaluation and scoring: You can use online exam software to enable automatic grading for exam takers that can help check the accuracy of their answers in real time. You can also share the scores immediately after the exam ends. Set grade-based redirects to the next step, such as a retest or completion certificate.
• Identify knowledge gaps through performance reports: You can access the performance insights for individual or group exam takers to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Utilize the identified action points to enhance the teaching pedagogy, and improve the learning and exam performance.
• Prevent exam malpractices through online proctoring: You can monitor exam takers’ activity by recording their screen, video, and background noise. Ensure that they follow the exam rules and guidelines and do not seek help from someone else or the internet.
• Collaborate on question papers via exam authoring: Using exam software, you can connect with multiple authors to create and finalize exam questions through live document sharing. You may discuss the changes over a call or leave comments in the document, which the authors can address later. Collaborate in real time to keep track of changes and reduce the time spent on offline sharing and updating individual authors.
• Automate exam creation using question bank: You can use online exam software to create the question paper by picking questions from the question bank. You may randomize the selection from single or multiple topics based on the exam’s subject. Generate question papers automatically to improve efficiency and avoid errors from manually adding questions or uploading documents.

How much does Exam Software cost?

Most products on the market are priced on a per-month basis and can be divided into three pricing tiers based on their starting price.

Price ranges:*

• $26 - $84
• $85 - $289
• $289+

*The pricing included is for the entry-level/lowest-priced offering found on vendor websites on November 25, 2022. These ranges correspond to the 25th, 75th, and 100th percentiles of pricing information gathered from vendor websites of sample products.

The above list summarizes pricing for the base plans of most products. An enterprise or premium product that is priced higher may include additional features, such as course creation, real-time analytics, customized exam URL, mock exam, and progress bar.

What are the key considerations when purchasing Exam Software?

• Check your educational requirements: Educational institutions and businesses can use online exam software to assess students and employees. It is crucial to check for business-specific features that can help develop performance reports and completion certificates. Another important feature to look for when buying online exam software is automatic proctoring and employee grading.
• Look for multiple question formats: Look for an online examination system that lets you customize the exam with different question formats. You can choose multiple choice, sliders, file upload, ranking, and other available formats. Customizing questions allows the exam takers to answer in varying degrees of detail. Furthermore, you can assess the exam results for different question formats and identify gaps in learning.
• Assess collaboration tools: Educational institutions and businesses should check the collaboration features offered by selected exam software before making the final choice. Teachers, professors, and managers often connect with students and employees to address performance gaps. Hence, it is important to pick an online exam software that lets you create and share the performance dashboard with metrics, such as exams taken, average scores, individual scores, and upcoming exams.
• Opt for spaced learning algorithm: Spaced learning is a technique that involves breaking up the study sessions over a period of time. The method allows online exam takers to get breaks and engage in other activities rather than studying at a stretch. It can be used in exam software to create practice tests and enhance the learners’ ability to retain and recall. The tool creates a set of online tests that the learners take after completing each study session. This process helps evaluate their performance and identify the areas of improvement. The tests are repeated, gradually increasing the study time.

What are the common questions to ask Exam Software vendors?

• Does the tool allow browser lockdown? You should ask the online exam software provider if the tool’s proctoring feature restricts access to other websites and browsers during the exam. An artificial intelligence-based proctor blocks the ability to minimize the browser window, switch between tabs, or use keyboard shortcuts, such as copy and paste, during the online test.
• Can I integrate exam software with a data management system? You can check with the online software provider if you can integrate the online exam software with a data management system, such as Google Drive or Microsoft Excel. This process will allow exporting or importing the files directly between the tools instead of manually downloading and uploading.
• Does the tool offer practice tests and spaced learning? Consider checking with the software provider about the availability of spaced learning algorithms to create practice exams for employees or students. Spaced learning is a limited feature, and you should carefully assess the online exam software’s subscription plans to find the best match.
• Can I customize the online exam? You can ask the online exam software provider if the tool allows you to customize the exam template with your branding elements, such as background colors, logo, or font style. Also, check if you can add videos or images to support the questions. Customization makes the online examination more engaging and improves the learning experience for both students and employees.
• Does the tool help generate completion certificates? You can check with the software provider if you can generate custom completion certificates for employees and students with their full name, department, and topic of the online exam taken. You should be able to download the certificate in different formats (jpeg, PDF, etc.) and share it with the exam takers
