Varnish Enterprise
بواسطة Varnish Software
Varnish Software is the commercial company behind Varnish Enterprise, a high‑performance HTTP caching and content‑delivery platform. The firm develops enterprise tooling around the widely used open‑source Varnish Cache, adding features for large‑scale web/app acceleration, streaming/OTT, private CDN, API delivery, and object‑storage/S3 optimization. Varnish Enterprise is positioned as a programmable delivery layer that runs on any infrastructure (bare metal, VMs, containers, public cloud) and can be centrally managed via Varnish Controller for multi‑node orchestration and traffic steering (Traffic Router).
Varnish Software highlights record-setting performance benchmarks (hundreds of Gbps per node; later >1.3 Tbps per server on 4th‑Gen Intel Xeon), reflecting its focus on throughput, power efficiency, and low latency for web, APIs, and video workloads. The company’s site emphasizes Fortune 500s, broadcasters, SaaS platforms, and telcos among production users.
The roots of Varnish go back to Norway (2005–2006), when Verdens Gang (VG Multimedia) sought a faster, more scalable edge layer. Danish FreeBSD developer Poul‑Henning Kamp architected the project, focusing on a programmable configuration language (VCL) and HTTP-only acceleration. The open-source Varnish 1.0 shipped in September 2006; Varnish 2.0 followed in 2008.
Varnish Software was spun out and founded in 2010 as a commercial entity, maintaining open-source stewardship while building enterprise-grade products and services. Early, high‑profile adoptions by Facebook and media sites fueled growth, and the firm later expanded offices across EMEA, APAC and North America (e.g., Stockholm HQ; London, Paris, Düsseldorf, Oslo, Karlstad; Los Angeles/New York; Tokyo; Singapore APAC HQ).
Publicly available data indicates Varnish Software has institutional investors including SwediaCapital and Neqst. Historical metrics show revenue of ~84.5 M SEK (2019) across the Swedish corporate entity and associated legal entities, but there is no widely disclosed public valuation figure; the company is privately held. (Any current valuation would typically be contractually private unless announced.)
Tracxn’s company profile (last updated June 25, 2025) confirms the funding and investors, and describes the product suite (DIY CDN, streaming server, API acceleration), plus named clients (e.g., New York Times, Emirates, Nikon, Sky, Eurosport, CBC, Vimeo, Tesco). Treat revenue and investor info as historical indicators; for up‑to‑date valuations, one must rely on direct company disclosures or recent filings, which are not publicly posted.
Core products include:
Varnish Controller: centralized control plane (Agent/Brainz/API GW/Traffic Router over NATS) to push VCL safely with validation/staging/rollback, automate node discovery, monitor health/metrics and steer traffic across PoPs or multi‑CDN.
Performance proofs demonstrate ~500 Gbps+ TLS throughput per server (Intel/Varnish white paper) and later >1.3 Tbps per server at ~1.17 Gbps/W (Intel + Supermicro), underscoring suitability for 4K/UHD live, VOD, and high‑concurrency edge delivery.
Recent product news highlights Global Rate Limiting (coordinated, cross‑node enforcement via NATS), enhancements to CDN Router, and a layered security suite—announced at IBC 2025. Earlier updates introduced MSE 4 and an updated Traffic Router for broadcasters/telcos, reflecting continued focus on scale and security. Varnish maintains active release cadences for Enterprise and Controller, with frequent point releases and public documentation/news pages.
The documentation site lists recent Enterprise and Controller releases (e.g., late‑2025 notes), showing ongoing iteration across products and components.
Varnish Software emphasizes open‑source roots, technical excellence, and a diverse, globally distributed team culture. Company pages describe a “laid‑back but stimulating” environment with long‑tenured employees, inclusive hiring, and a focus on innovation—particularly in edge computing, streaming, and customizable delivery logic. The culture narrative ties back to early VCL design principles (making superior tech deployable and operable) and continuing engagement with the wider Varnish Cache community.
User base spans media, e‑commerce, SaaS and telco—public references include major publishers and enterprises (e.g., New York Times, Sky, Eurosport, CBC, Vimeo, Tesco, Emirates, Nikon). The company positions Enterprise for Fortune 500s, broadcasters, telcos and platform teams building private CDNs and high‑throughput delivery stacks.
The community around Varnish Cache remains active, with documentation, books/tutorials, and community channels. Varnish Software’s documentation hub and developer portal support both open-source and enterprise users; Controller/Otel integrations reflect modern observability practices adopted by SRE teams.
