UrBackup

UrBackup is a high-performance, open-source client/server backup system designed for both file and image-level data protection. By combining the flexibility of file backups with the comprehensive safety of image backups, it ensures fast restoration times and robust data integrity. The system operates on a client-server architecture where a central server manages backup schedules, storage, and monitoring, while lightweight clients installed on workstations or servers handle the actual data transmission. UrBackup is particularly renowned for its efficiency, utilizing advanced deduplication and compression technologies to minimize storage requirements. It supports full and incremental backups for both files and disk images, and it is capable of performing these tasks while the system is in active use, ensuring zero downtime for the user. Technically, UrBackup stands out for its cross-platform support, covering Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS. For Windows systems, it offers a specialized 'Changed Block Tracking' (CBT) driver that drastically reduces the time required for incremental backups by identifying modified disk sectors in real-time. The server-side component features a comprehensive web-based administration interface that allows IT administrators to monitor client status, manage global backup policies, and initiate restoration processes remotely. One of its most powerful features is the 'Internet mode,' which enables secure backups of remote devices over the public internet without requiring a VPN. This makes UrBackup an ideal solution for modern, distributed workforces where employees may not always be connected to the local office network.

The primary competitive advantage of UrBackup lies in its unique combination of open-source transparency, cross-platform flexibility, and advanced storage efficiency that typically characterizes expensive enterprise software. While many open-source backup tools focus exclusively on file-level data or require complex scripting, UrBackup provides a turnkey web-based interface and full image-level backup capabilities out of the box. Its deduplication engine is a standout feature; by identifying and storing only unique data blocks across the entire client fleet, it can reduce storage consumption by up to 60-80% in environments with many similar operating systems and applications. This level of efficiency is a significant differentiator compared to other free tools that perform simple copy-based backups. Another major advantage is the specialized Changed Block Tracking (CBT) driver for Windows. This proprietary-grade technology allows UrBackup to perform incremental image backups with minimal I/O overhead, a feature often reserved for high-end paid products. Furthermore, UrBackup’s 'Internet mode' provides a native, secure way to back up remote clients without the latency and configuration headaches of a VPN, making it superior for managing modern hybrid workforces. Finally, because the core software is AGPL-licensed, organizations benefit from total data sovereignty and the ability to audit the code for security, while having the option to purchase commercial support or a pre-configured appliance from Infscape for enterprise-grade reliability. This hybrid model allows UrBackup to scale from home labs to large corporate infrastructures with ease.
