Ubersmith Inc. is a leading provider of business management software for the cloud, hosting, and data center industries. Headquartered in New York City, the company has established itself as the 'operating system' for technical infrastructure providers. Since its inception, Ubersmith has focused on solving the unique challenges of usage-based billing and device management. The company operates as an autonomous business unit within Lumine Group (a subsidiary of Volaris Group and Constellation Software), following a significant acquisition in 2021. This corporate structure provides Ubersmith with the financial backing of a multi-billion dollar parent company while allowing it to maintain the specialized focus and agility of a niche software provider. Today, Ubersmith serves a global client base including industry giants like Digital Realty, Namecheap, and PhoenixNAP, helping them manage over 4,000 active users and complex service environments across 15 countries.
The roots of Ubersmith date back to 1999 when it was originally developed as an internal billing solution called 'CBMS' (Cloud Business Management System) for Voxel, an enterprise cloud and hosting provider. Recognizing the software's commercial potential beyond its own walls, Voxel commercialized the platform for external sale in 2002. In a pivotal early move in 2001, Voxel merged CBMS with TicketSmith—a popular customer management and ticketing solution for data centers—and rebranded the unified suite as Ubersmith. This integration of billing and support from the very beginning set the stage for Ubersmith's unique position in the market. The software was built by engineers who understood the hosting industry's specific needs, such as the necessity for automated provisioning and real-time bandwidth monitoring, which has remained the core of its DNA for over two decades.
Ubersmith's financial history is defined more by strategic acquisitions than traditional venture capital rounds. After a decade of successful growth as a commercial entity, Ubersmith and its parent company Voxel were acquired in 2011 by Internap (INAP), a global provider of data center and cloud services. Under INAP's ownership, Ubersmith continued to develop its modular suite and expand its enterprise footprint. A major turning point occurred on July 1, 2021, when Lumine Group—a division of Volaris Group focused on communications and media software—acquired Ubersmith as a 'carve-out' from INAP. Lumine Group is known for its 'buy and hold forever' philosophy, providing Ubersmith with long-term capital stability without the pressure of an exit timeline. Lumine Group itself was later spun out from Constellation Software as a separate public company (TSX: LMN), further solidifying the financial resources available to Ubersmith for ongoing product development and global expansion.
Ubersmith offers a highly modular business management suite centered around four core pillars: Billing, Infrastructure, Support, and Sales. The Billing module is the engine of the platform, handling everything from standard recurring subscriptions to complex usage-based pricing for bandwidth, power, and cloud resources. The Infrastructure module provides real-time device monitoring, IP address management (IPAM), and remote reboot capabilities, ensuring that billing is always synced with technical reality. The Support Manager offers a full help desk experience with deep integration into customer billing records, while the Sales Manager provides a complete quoting and order management workflow. These offerings are complemented by a robust Client Portal that empowers end-users with self-service capabilities. The platform's modularity means that customers can choose the specific 'gears' they need, whether it's just the billing engine or the full-service business suite.
Ubersmith has successfully transitioned from a US-centric hosting tool to a global enterprise platform. Today, the company serves customers in over 15 countries and has a presence on six continents. Its expansion has been driven by the global growth of the data center and cloud service industry. While headquartered in New York, Ubersmith supports a worldwide user base through localized tax management, multi-currency billing, and support for multiple languages, including English and Spanish. The acquisition by Lumine Group has accelerated its international reach, as Lumine maintains an extensive global network of communications and media software businesses. This partnership allows Ubersmith to leverage regional expertise and localized resources to better serve clients in emerging markets and major global hubs, ensuring that its infrastructure-aware solutions are accessible to service providers regardless of their geographic location.
Ubersmith has maintained a consistent release cadence, recently launching major updates in Versions 5.0 and 5.1. Key enhancements in the last 12-18 months include full support for PHP 8.2 and MySQL 8.0, which significantly improves system performance and security. The platform also introduced a revamped client portal with improved navigation and mobile responsiveness. Other notable additions include customizable credit notes, HTML support for email signatures, and TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) two-factor authentication for administrators. On the integration front, Ubersmith has updated its PayPal integration to the latest API standards and enhanced its QuickBooks Online exporter. The most recent Version 5.1.4 (released in early 2026) added dashboard notifications for new releases and optimized database performance for large-scale invoice processing, demonstrating a continued focus on enterprise scalability and administrative usability.
Ubersmith's culture is built upon four core values: Integrity, Accountability, Empowerment, and Diversity. As an autonomous business unit within Lumine Group, the company maintains a collaborative and technical work environment where innovation is driven by solving real-world infrastructure problems. The leadership, recently transitioned to CEO JP Marques, emphasizes a decentralized model that empowers individual teams to take ownership of their product roadmap and customer relationships. The company values a diverse and inclusive environment, believing that a wide range of perspectives drives better software solutions for its global customer base. Ubersmith also places a high priority on work-life balance and a professional yet approachable atmosphere, which has helped it retain long-term employees who possess deep domain expertise in the hosting and telecommunications industries.
The Ubersmith community is primarily composed of technical professionals, sysadmins, and business leaders in the hosting and data center sectors. While it does not host a massive public forum, it maintains a highly active ecosystem through its comprehensive documentation site (docs.ubersmith.com) and a dedicated support portal where users can exchange ideas and best practices. The company engages its community through its blog, which provides industry insights and product updates, and its presence on professional networks like LinkedIn. Furthermore, the platform's open API and plugin system have created a community of developers who share custom code and integrations. Ubersmith also participates in major industry conferences and tradeshows, providing a physical space for its global user base to connect, provide feedback, and influence the future direction of the software suite.
