What is 3D CAD Software?

3D CAD Software is a computer-aided design tool used by designers, engineers, and architects to design 3D models, structures, blueprints, and remodeling plans. It helps to create functional, virtual prototypes of three-dimensional designs. Using this software, designers can dynamically check errors in the design, identify potential issues, and make adjustments.

This software streamlines and automates product engineering processes such as simulation testing, sketching and drafting, manufacturing, and data management. 3D CAD software not only aids in the conceptualization of ideas but also in the photorealistic rendering and presentation of models, allowing designers to comprehend how the design will be assembled.

The benefits of 3D CAD Software

The benefits of using 3D CAD program vary per business requirements, but the following ones are worth noting:

• Enhanced communication: 3D CAD software helps designers create highly interactive designs/models with detailed geometric measurements, material specifications, and surrounding stipulations. It renders a clear picture of how a design will be manufactured and assembled, thereby improving communication between designers and engineers.
• Increases efficiency and productivity: This software allows designers and engineers to visualize their designs using 3D modeling and animations. A 3D model in action can be easily viewed from each perspective, allowing quick detection of any stress points or flaws. It increases efficiency by accelerating the design process and lowering design costs.
• Easier prototyping: This software enables designers to convert 3D CAD models into STL (Standard Tessellation Language or STereoLithography) files for 3D prototyping. It offers navigational elements, visuals, and interactions to create prototypes that depict how the final project will function.
• Improved data management: Designers and engineers need to record the bill of materials (BOM) with every change or update in the design. The 3D modeling feature of this software eliminates manual data maintenance by automatically updating the BOM as per the change in the design.

Typical features of 3D CAD Software

Here are some of the most common features of 3D CAD software:

• 3D modeling: Create a three-dimensional model/design to offer a realistic image of your project, capturing its size, material, optical properties, and physical properties.
• Annotations: Annotate files using highlights and hyperlinks to connect different pieces of the project.
• 2D drawing: Make 2D drawings to represent how your design should be manufactured and put together.
• Collaboration tools: Collaborate and co-edit a 3D infrastructure model using multi-user settings, annotations, and merged coding.
• Animation: Build 3D animation for different aspects of your project to offer an interactive experience.
• Data import/export: Import and export data files, diagrams, and 3D models.
• Drag and drop: Drag and drop pre-built design components to your 3D model to set up the user interface.
• Version control: Track changes to a 3D design over time so that specific versions can be restored as and when required.
• Component library: Add interactive elements such as texts, images, animations, flowcharts, and diagrams from the components library to render immersive presentations.
• Compliance management: Manage complicated compliance standards proactively to mitigate risk and reduce administrative responsibilities.

The cost of 3D CAD Software

Most products in the market are priced on a “per month” basis and can be divided into three pricing tiers based on their starting price.

Price ranges*:

• $3 - $16
• $16 - $92
• $92+

*The pricing included is for the entry-level/lowest-priced offering found on vendor websites on September 30, 2021. These ranges correspond to the 25th, 75th, and 100th percentiles of pricing information gathered from vendor websites of sample products.

The above list summarizes pricing for the base plans of most products. An enterprise or premium product that is priced higher may include additional features such as sculpting tools, mesh modeling tools, API support, scheduling, and extra toolsets.

Considerations when purchasing 3D CAD Software

• Business requirements: Consider your business requirements before you select a solution. For example, if you work in an architecture firm, you’ll need a 3D CAD solution with advanced features such as 3D rendering, BIM, 3D printing, and drafting. Similarly, if you work in a company that makes metal sheets, you’ll need a solution that is good with flat patterns.
• Integration with existing tools: 3D CAD software works alongside powerful computer configuration tools for graphical support and design version management. Thereby, it is important to ensure that the solution you choose is compatible with your existing hardware and software stack. A well-integrated software tool facilitates smooth designing and rectifications.
• Management cost: Software needs timely testing and maintenance throughout its lifecycle. And, some elements (such as plugins and extra toolsets) may incur extra costs. Be sure to consider long-term management and additional costs before investing in a tool.

Relevant 3D CAD Software trends

• Artificial intelligence and generative design in CAD: Generative design technology helps in creating 3D models optimized by computer software. It enables users to set up requirements (such as manufacturing processes and constraints) for a project and then creates a 3D model based on these requirements. With AI, designers can upload their designs and define constraints (such as size, material, and cost) to automatically generate optimum 3D models. This helps design teams create high-quality designs and ensure efficient use of resources.
• Model-based definition: Model-based definition (MBD) refers to the process of using annotated 3D CAD model, including product manufacturing information (PMI), manufacturing data, and product assemblies to define the individual components of a project. MBD presentations are easy to develop and can be used by different teams within the same organization. Many businesses have already devised MBD in their day-to-day operations. In the near future, more businesses will be introducing this feature.
