SoftProject GmbH is a prominent German software company that has specialized in business process management and data integration since its founding in 2000. Headquartered in Ettlingen, the company has established itself as a mid-market leader in the DACH region, serving over 300 major organizations across Europe. Its mission is to simplify digital transformation through powerful, low-code technology that connects people, systems, and data. SoftProject's flagship product, X4 BPMS, reflects this vision by providing an 'all-in-one' platform that replaces fragmented IT toolsets with a unified automation landscape. The company maintains a strong focus on industries with high regulatory and integration requirements, such as insurance, energy, and manufacturing, positioning itself as a strategic partner for long-term digitization rather than just a software vendor.

SoftProject was founded in 2000 by Dirk Detmer to revolutionize how companies manage digital automation. Originally starting in Germany, the founder's vision was to create a platform that would allow business departments to model processes that could be executed directly by IT systems without traditional, lengthy programming cycles. In 2008, the company relocated its headquarters to Ettlingen to accommodate its growing team and expand its customer service operations. Over the decades, Dirk Detmer led the company from a small specialist firm to an international provider, maintaining a consistent focus on 'Made in Germany' quality and security standards. In 2024, SoftProject entered a new phase of growth after a majority investment by Main Capital Partners, though Detmer remains significantly involved in the company's strategic direction.

For much of its history, SoftProject grew organically through its strong customer base in the insurance and utility sectors. A major milestone in its financial history occurred in July 2024, when Main Capital Partners, a leading European software investor, acquired a majority stake in the company. This investment was the first from Main’s €1.9 billion 'MCVIII' fund. The partnership was designed to accelerate SoftProject's international expansion and support a 'buy-and-build' strategy. Following this, in June 2025, SoftProject successfully acquired the French software provider Blueway, demonstrating the company's newfound capacity for inorganic growth and its strategic aim to consolidate its position in the European BPM and Master Data Management (MDM) markets.

The company's primary offering is the X4 BPMS (Business Process Management Suite), which is structured as a modular ecosystem. It includes X4 ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) for backend integration, X4 BPM for modeling and execution based on BPMN 2.0, and X4 Activities for human-centric task management. Additionally, SoftProject offers the X4 Monitoring tool for real-time business activity monitoring and an Adapter Development Kit (ADK) for developers. Beyond software, SoftProject provides a full range of professional services, including project consulting, implementation support, and the SoftProject Academy, which offers professional training and certifications for users, architects, and developers to ensure successful platform adoption.

SoftProject has aggressively expanded its geographic footprint beyond its original German headquarters. In 2017, the company opened a subsidiary in Valencia, Spain, to serve the Southern European market and support international projects. This was followed by the establishment of a Swiss office in St. Gallen in 2021 to strengthen its presence in the DACH financial and insurance sectors. The 2025 acquisition of Blueway significantly expanded SoftProject's reach into the French market and added specialized expertise in healthcare and public administration. Currently, the company employs over 150 professionals and works with a network of over 20 strategic partners to deliver its solutions across various European territories.

Recent updates to the X4 BPMS platform (specifically version 7.1 and X4 11) have introduced several high-impact features focused on user experience and emerging technologies. A major addition is the AI-supported development assistant, which uses machine learning to generate data mappings and UI drafts from simple inputs, dramatically speeding up the low-code development process. The platform also introduced a new 'Grid Component' for flexible data visualization in web apps and integrated Keycloak as the standard for centralized identity and access management. Furthermore, the suite has enhanced its support for Docker and Linux environments, catering to modern DevOps practices and containerized deployment strategies.

The company culture at SoftProject is built on the pillars of innovation, quality, and security. As a mid-sized German enterprise, it fosters a collaborative environment where expertise and hands-on support are prioritized. The company values professional development, exemplified by its dedicated SoftProject Academy, and encourages a 'security-first' mindset in software development. Since the acquisition by Main Capital Partners, the culture has evolved to be more growth-oriented and international, yet it retains a strong commitment to its roots in Ettlingen. Employees are encouraged to work on transformative technologies like AI and IoT while maintaining the reliability expected by their enterprise-scale clients in critical infrastructure sectors.

SoftProject maintains an active user community through various engagement channels. The SoftProject Academy serves as the central hub for learning, offering online seminars, in-person workshops, and certification programs for different skill levels. The company also hosts regular 'Release Webinars' where customers can see new features live and interact with product experts. For developers, SoftProject provides a comprehensive documentation portal and an SDK environment that encourages the creation of custom components. Additionally, the company is active at industry conferences like 'Insurtech Insights' and utility-specific forums, fostering a network of professionals focused on digital transformation and process excellence.
