Woodstock Optimization Studio

Remsoft is a pioneering Canadian technology company that has spent over 30 years defining the field of prescriptive analytics for the forestry and natural resource sectors. Headquartered in Fredericton, New Brunswick—a hub for forestry innovation—the company has expanded its footprint to include offices in Ottawa, Brazil, and New Zealand. Remsoft's mission is to empower organizations to maximize the value and sustainability of their land and assets through data intelligence. The company is recognized globally for its deep domain expertise, serving a client base that includes some of the world's largest forest product companies, public land agencies, and environmental consultants. As the industry shifts toward digital transformation, Remsoft has evolved from a desktop software provider to a holistic solution partner, integrating its core optimization technology into cloud-native platforms like Remsoft Operations to provide real-time visibility across the entire supply chain.

Remsoft was founded in 1992 by the husband-and-wife team of Andrea Feunekes and Ugo Feunekes. The company started in Fredericton, Canada, with a vision to bring mathematical rigor to forest planning. Andrea, serving as CEO, brought a background in business and forest management, while Ugo, as CTO, provided the technical expertise in optimization modeling. Their early work addressed the critical challenge of 'sustainable yield'—helping foresters determine how much they could harvest today without compromising the future. This vision evolved into the 'Remsoft Spatial Planning System,' which eventually became the Woodstock Optimization Studio. Under their leadership, Remsoft grew from a niche modeling firm into a global leader, famously being named a 'Gartner Cool Vendor' in 2011 for its innovative approach to asset lifecycle optimization. The founders remain deeply involved in the company's strategic direction and the broader forestry community.

For much of its history, Remsoft operated as a highly successful private company. However, to accelerate its global expansion and the development of its cloud-based 'Remsoft Operations' platform, the company secured significant strategic investment. In March 2025, Remsoft announced a major investment from Banneker Partners, a technology-focused private equity firm. This funding round was aimed at scaling Remsoft’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings and expanding its market reach into broader infrastructure and asset-intensive industries. While the specific dollar amount of the deal was not publicly disclosed, the partnership with Banneker represented a pivotal shift for the company, providing the capital needed to enhance its AI and machine learning capabilities and pursue potential acquisitions, such as the 2025 acquisition of Enabled, an IT consulting firm based in Australia.

The Remsoft product ecosystem is centered around the Woodstock Optimization Studio, but it includes several interconnected modules and companion products. 'Remsoft Operations' is the cloud-based management system that centralizes data and plans for real-time visibility. 'Stratus' offers a comprehensive forest management and inventory system, while 'Prism' provides tools for inventory data collection and reporting. Specialized tools like 'Op Tracker' offer real-time telematics for harvesting equipment, and 'Log365' automates data transfers from the field. For optimization, Woodstock is the engine, but it is often deployed alongside 'Woodstock Scheduler' for short-term crew and delivery scheduling, and 'Road Optimizer' for infrastructure planning. This integrated suite allows a company to manage everything from a 100-year strategic forest plan down to the daily movement of a single harvester.

Remsoft has a truly global footprint, with clients across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company established 'Remsoft LTDA' in São José dos Campos, Brazil, to serve the booming South American pulp and paper industry, and it has a strong presence in the Australasia region managed through its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Canterbury, New Zealand. Recent geographic expansion has focused on Southeast Asia and the Middle East, as governments in these regions seek more sophisticated tools for land use planning and environmental conservation. The company’s growth strategy involves a mix of direct sales and a robust Global Partner Network, which includes GIS leaders like Esri and regional consultants who provide localized implementation and support.

Recent updates to the Woodstock Optimization Studio have focused on UI modernization and enhanced data connectivity. The 2023.02 release introduced a revamped 'Allocation Optimizer' UI, which significantly improved the visualization of complex wood flow and supply chain models. This release also added 'Road Builder' enhancements to support more detailed transport cost tables. In 2024, Remsoft introduced new 'SQL Scenario Reporting' capabilities, allowing users to merge and update scenario data directly in SQL databases, making it easier to connect Woodstock outputs with enterprise Business Intelligence tools. Other recent innovations include 'Clustering' logic to handle massive datasets and improved 'Constraint Logic' that allows for 'all or nothing' harvesting decisions, bringing even more realism to optimized plans.

Remsoft is known for a culture that balances high-tech innovation with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement. The company values 'independent thinking' and 'problem-solving,' often recruiting experts who have both forestry and software backgrounds. Based in the Maritimes region of Canada, Remsoft maintains a close-knit, collaborative work environment that emphasizes long-term client relationships—many of its customers have been with the company for over 20 years. The company is also a strong supporter of academic research, providing free or discounted software to universities and participating in global forestry conferences to share knowledge on sustainable resource management. Their leadership team, including CEO Andrea Feunekes, is frequently recognized for contributions to entrepreneurship and the forestry industry.

The Remsoft community is active and global, primarily centered around its biennial 'Global Forestry Conference' (with the next major event scheduled for Montreal in March 2026). This conference serves as a key gathering for forest planners, analysts, and executives to share best practices in optimization. Online, Remsoft maintains a dedicated 'Product Blog' and a self-service 'Help System' that provides technical tips, release notes, and documentation. The company also fosters a developer ecosystem through its 'Integrator' functionality, which allows power users to share scripts and automation techniques. For new users, the 'Woodstock 101' training sessions and regional user groups provide a platform for peer-to-peer learning and networking, ensuring that the 'Woodstock community' remains the most knowledgeable group of planners in the industry.
